Shake your groove thing.

Disney is well-known for their high-scale musical cartoons. Pop ballads from or inspired by their musical cartoons usually find themselves at the top of the charts. THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE was supposed to be a musical like that, one with a strong moral message, lots of syrupy love songs, and breathtaking animation. However, something happened along the way. The movie took a completely different turn (why do you think the film was 1st released at the end of the year instead of the summer?) and ended up being the least serious of all Disney full-length animated features. Thank goodness! It's about time the power-mouse took a break, had some fun (without too many perverted subtlties), and made a movie that adults will probably enjoy more than children. The closest Disney flick THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE resembles is ALADDIN. However, the humor in this film is more akin to the Muppets, the Simpsons, and early Warner Brothers cartoons. David Spade is perfect as the voice of Emperor Kuzco, John Goodman is delightful as the peasant Pacha who saves Kuzco many tmes, and Patrick Warburton steals the movie as the voice of Kronk. The basic outline of the story is that Kuzco is a selfish Emperor who wants to destroy Pacha's village so he can build a summer home. He fires his advisor Yzma (Eartha Kitt) because he doesn't trust her and in retaliation she plans to kill him. However, Kronk accidently mistakes a llama transformation potion for poison and Kuzco turns into one of the hairy bests instead. Yzma still wants Kuzco dead, but Krok has a conscience and can't complete the task. Eventually, Kuzco ends up in Pacha's wagon and that's all your going to get; my groove just changed.

Pros: David Spade is awesome as a voice actor     Cons: It's not up there with Disney's more renowned movies – oh well.     The Bottom Line: "Hey tiny, I wanna get out of this body, wouldn't you??"     Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot. “Because you won’t change your mind, I’m not taking you back. Mee mee mee moo moo moo…”      I don’t think I’ve ever …

"The Emperor's New Groove" is a unique film in the vaults at Disney. It plays with the audience instead of in front of the audience, and the burning sarcasm of the emperor's character isn't found in any other Disney flick. Unfortunately, this movie seems to be cursed by the idea that any Disney movie has to be done on a grand scale and end with some great moral truth. Why can't a Disney movie just be fun?   "The Emperor's New Groove" doesn't seem to draw as much attention as other Disney …

About this movie

Wiki

Originally developed as an epic calledKingdom of the Sun,The Emperor's New Groovelost scale and most of Sting's song score (some of which can be heard on the soundtrack) on its way to the screen. The end result is the lightest Disney film in many a moon, a joyous romp akin toAladdinin its quotient of laughs for kids and adults. The original story centers on the spoiled teenage emperor Kuzco (David Spade), who enjoys getting the best of his Aztecan subjects. When he fires Yzma (Eartha Kitt), his evil sorceress, she seeks revenge and turns Kuzco into a llama with the help of her hunk of the month, a lunk named Kronk (Patrick Warburton). Alone in the jungle, the talking llama is befriended by Pacha (John Goodman), who has just been told to vacate his pastoral home by the human Kuzco. What's an ego to do? That's pretty much the story and the characters--simple, direct, fun--a Disney film on a diet. For any fan of the acidic humor of Spade, this is essential viewing. As narrator of his tale, Kuzco uses a sarcastic tone to keep the story jumping with plenty of fun asides (he even "stops" the film at one point to make sure you know the story is abouthim). Even better is character actor Warburton (Elaine's stuck-up boyfriend onSeinfeld), who steals every scene as the dim-witted, but oh-so-likable Kronk. There's even a delicious Tom Jones number that starts the film off with a bang.--Doug Thomas
