Despite Being Formulaic, Entertaining

  • Mar 21, 2009
The Guardian - starring Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher - is rather formulaic and bit clichéd, but at the same time entertaining. The story features an aging Coast Guard rescue swimmer, Ben Randall, played by Kevin Costner, who after an unfortunate incident at sea is sent to instruct a class of would be rescue swimmers to give him a break and recover. There he runs into the cocky Jake Fischer who is clearly a superior swimmer but has an attitude. Randall is already a legend as a Coast Guard rescue swimmer, and Fischer thinks he already is one without having done anything, which sets up some interesting interactions. There are other things about Fischer we learn along the way that really make the character rather interesting.

The Guardian borrows heavily from An Officer and a Gentlemen and other movies of this ilk like Men of Honor. But it's also different enough to keep the viewer's interest. The character development of Randall and Fischer is very well done - especially Fischer as we see him mature before our eyes throughout movie. While a little long at 2 hours and 19 minutes, this length provides enough time to round out the story.

Despite the drawbacks mentioned above, I found the movie entertaining and the story compelling.
