The Hitcher is a nail biting thriller filled with homo eroticism that starred C. Thomas Howell stars as Jim Halsey a young man who's driving his brother's car cross country. He makes the mistake of picking up a bored psychopath named John Ryder (Rutger Hauer) who develops an immediate crush for the kid. Jim ditches the nut job at the first chance he gets. But the crazy psycho wont give up on chasing him even if he has to track him down in the middle of the southwestern wastelands.

Poor Jim doesn't put enough miles between him and his "buddy".  The crazy nut job catches him and makes the rest of his cross country trip a living hell. John sets him up for several capital murders and brutally slays a girl (Jennifer Jason Leigh) Jim falls in love with. After getting caught red handed and treating the kid to some authentic finger food, this batty bed bug doesn't let a prison bus,a bunch of cops or a pair of heavy shackles stop him from having a desert shown down with his Jim. A brutal fight ensures with C. Thomas blowing away Rutger with a pump action police issued riot shotgun with an extend clip. Followed by a sequel and a big budget remake.

A tense game of cat-and-mouse. Rutger Hauer plays a role that he knows and fits in it like a well worn glove. C. Thomas plays a naive and dumb kid as if he was custom made for the part.

The original script that didn't make it to the screen was a lot darker and violent and was therefore scrapped (because darkness and violence is just no good), the suspense isn't too slow-burn for a majority audience so that it's easily accessible, and it'd got a big name in the cast that everyone adores. The producers were convinced that they weren't making a slasher film at all when they were making …
