One of the Best Sports Films Ever!

Roy Hobbes (Redford) had a chance at being one of the greatest pitchers that the game of baseball had ever seen.  He is followed by a relentless sports reporter (Rober Duvall) and even strikes out a Babe Ruth type player, The Whammer on a bet.  One night his career is cut short by a woman who wants fame by killing someone with great talent.  She shoots Roy and though he survives his baseball career is cut short.

The film fastforwards to several years later as an much older Roy comes out of obscurity and does a "Joe Hardy" aided by a magical bat called Wonder Boy.  Roy single-handedly seems to lift a team from nowhere into contention for the pennant.  Buoyed by the vision of a glowing woman in white (Glenn Close), Joe is inspired to help his team win.

The movie has one of the most memorable homerun scenes in movie history.  A phenominal film with great acting all-around and great directing.  Should not be missed!

If a Top 10 Best Sports Movies doesn't have this in the Top 5, the list is crap (same goes for "Hoosiers"). Fantastic movie. But, as I found out on Turner Classic Movies, it doesn't end the way it did in the book. In the book, Hobbs threw game. This version is better. Much better.

About this movie

The Natural
is a 1984 film adaptation of Bernard Malamud's 1952 baseball novel of the same name. The film was directed by Barry Levinson and stars Robert Redford. The film, like the book, recounts the experiences of Roy Hobbs, an individual with great "natural" baseball talent, spanning decades of Roy's success and his suffering.

The Natural was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actress (Glenn Close), and nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress (Kim Basinger). Many of the baseball scenes were filmed in Buffalo, New York's War Memorial Stadium, built in 1937 and demolished a few years after the film was produced. Buffalo's All-High Stadium stood in for Chicago's Wrigley Field in a key scene.

It was the first film produced by TriStar Pictures.
