Color and Patterns!

I love all the color and patterns in this movie! That and it's a musical, but not schmaltzy. I LOVE Michele Legrand's score and watching a very young Catherine Deneuve and Marc Michelle, among others. I can watch this movie over and over. The music is amazing! The sets too! The story line, while simple, keeps one wondering, engaged. This movie is so rich! Put it on your list!!

It was one of the first foreign films I ever saw, way back when it was still showing in what were then called "art houses." The political context didn't mean anything to me--the war in Algeria--but it resonates more and more as we look back on colonialism. Love (and heartbreak) are always in the air, though. That's a nice constant to remember when obsessing about the way the world is going.
