Bullets, blood squibs and bone crunching action! My favorite action scenes.

The Wild Bunch (1969)
The final gunfight inside the Generalissimo's compound as Lyle, Tector and Pike take turns firing a Maxim Machine Gun, blood and bullets fly and the corpses pile. All three of them are killed in the finale with Pike's hand stuck on the gun handle. Sam Peckinpah's violent western would change the way action was shown in movies forever.

Police Story (1985)
Jackie Chan's fight scene inside a Hong Kong mall has to be seen to be believed. Action galore as Jackie and his stunt crew have a field day showcasing their awesome skills and death defying stunts.
Jackie Chan's hyper kinetic action scenes and death defying stunts would raise the bar on how high action films would be made.

A Better Tomorrow II (1987)
Ching Siu-Tung and John Woo redefine action in the final battle inside the crime boss' compound. Never has violence been captured on celluloid like this before since the days of Sam Peckinpah. The two directors would later recapture the magic in the equally carnage filled The Killer. Ching's fast paced action directing and John Woo's reinvention of Peckinpah's directing would be highly influential on how action films would be made.

Scarface (1983)
The raid on Tony Montana's compound and his final showdown with the hit squad is another carnage filled action set piece. Heavily influenced by Sam Peckinpah as the blood, bullets and body count fly as Tony introduces his unwelcome guests to his "little friend".

Boxer From Shantung (1972)
Chang Cheh's underrated epic tells the tale of Ma Yong Zhen a fast rising crime lord. His empire comes crashing down upon him in a blood drenched finale that pits Ma against a hundred hit men armed with hatchets and daggers. A film heavily influenced by the cinematic violence of Sam Peckinpah and it's end is very similar to the Scarface remake that would be made 11 years later.
Chang Cheh's directing style would strongly influence the Hong Kong film making industry and raised the stakes on blood and violence.

My Top 10 Action Scenes

I have some diverse choices. It's difficult to pin down the absolutely top 10 of all time but here's what came to mind. In no particular order and with some thought to psychological tension, especially in my first choice. Please note some of these are gorey and not safe for work consumption or very genteel sensibilities: V for Vendetta - so much action in this film but there is a climax!
