Pros: Really, really funny; Great commentary on life, love and relationships; Nice soundtrack
Cons: Men don't usually like it
This is one of my favorite movies, although I know it didn't make very many (if any at all) of my top ten lists. It's cute and funny and heartfelt, and it really reminds me of the relationship I have with my best friend.
Abby (Jeannine Garafolo) and Noel (Uma Thurman) become best friends because Abby sticks up for Noel when her boyfriend is yelling at her. Abby is a radio DJ while Noel is a model. They are almost as different in appearance as Dionne and I are! A listener who Abby helps out, Brian, becomes smitten with Abby. She lies about what she looks like, and makes Noel meet him. Both Abby and Noel wind up falling for Brian. Brian is in love with Abby's mind and Noel's looks. However, Brian thinks that Abby is one person-- Noel. Abby, in the meantime, poses as Abby's (really Noel's) friend, Donna. the truth finally comes out, and Brian chooses who he wants to be with.
You're probably very confused by my summary. Believe me, if you see the movie, it will make perfect sense to you.
If you haven't seen this movie, you really should. There's a lot of comedic elements which will really tickle your funny bone, especially if you're a girl. The direction is great and the soundtrack is fabulous. The pacing is very nice, too.
The movie gives a really good commentary on how a man can come between the friendship of two women. It demonstrates that friendship is more important than anything else, and that you shouldn't hurt those who help you out.
As for comparing it to my relationship with Dionne. . . I'm not Uma Thurman and Dionne definitely isn't Jeannine Garafolo. However, many people say that, if you put the two of us together, we make the perfect woman. I'm sure that many women out there feel the same way about at least one of their friends.
Many men don't like this film. If you're a woman, I highly recommend you watch it with some girlfriends. I went to see it with my friend, Tryg, and he complained during the whole movie.

In this modern variation of CYRANO DE BERGERAC, Abby (Janeane Garofalo) is a savvy, witty veterinarian who hosts a radio show about pets. She and a caller named Brian (Ben Chaplin) are drawn to each other while talking during her show, but when Brian asks Abby to describe herself, the average-looking woman cannot resist offering a description of her statuesque, gorgeous, and slightly dim-witted neighbor, Noelle (Uma Thurman), instead. Later, Brian makes a surprise visit to the radio station just when Noelle also happens to be there--and naturally thinks she's Abby. Scared of what might happen if Brian learned the truth, Abby asks Noelle to continue the masquerade. To complicate matters more, Brian is such a wonderful guy that both women fall for him. Will Abby--or Noelle--fess up to Brian? And will either one win his heart? Michael Lehmann (HEATHERS, AIRHEADS) directed this romantic comedy that tackles friendship, loyalty, matters of the heart, and the things that make people fall in love.
