A VeggieTales Lesson in Thankfulness

  • Mar 11, 2008
Pros: Unique plot to teach about Thankfulness, fun Silly Song, great variety in Special Features

Cons: None

The Bottom Line: Great VeggieTales episode that teaches about Thankfulness with a story that is easy for kids to understand. Plus it has a lot of fun special features.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie''s plot.

VeggieTales is an animated show featuring veggies and a few fruit as the main characters. Most shows including this one are started with Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber on the counter top introducing the story. In this episode the story is chosen because Larry is showing greed in wanting a lot of stuff he does not really need. The story that teaches about how having lots of stuff cannot bring happiness is the story of Madame Blueberry, a character that is introduced with this episode.

Madame Blueberry likes stuff and thinks it will bring her happiness to buy a bunch of stuff at Stuff Mart. On her way to Stuff Mart she encounters a girl that sings a song about being happy and having a thankful heart. Madame Blueberry wonders why the girl is so happy when all the girl has is a piece of pie. She forgets about this, though, as she begins going on a shopping spree at StuffMart. Then she notices Junior the Asparagus sing the same song when he gets just a ball. This makes her realize that all the stuff in the world will not make her happy and she learns a lesson in Thankfulness.

In the middle of the episode there is an intermission for the normal Silly Songs with Larry segment, but he is informed his segment has been canceled (see VeggieTales End of Silliness? about it coming back) and it ends up being Love Songs with Mr. Lunt. The song is “His Cheeseburger” and it is very much still a Silly Song, so while Larry does not sing it this episode still has the all important Silly Song that is a major part of what makes VeggieTales episodes entertaining for kids.

Special Features on this DVD are in two different menu sections. One is Features where there is an audio commentary version of the episode with the creators, a Behind the Scenes video, How to Draw Madame Blueberry, How to Draw the Salesman, an Art Gallery of concept art, and a Progression Reel of a scene. The other section of special features is the Fun! section. This section has activities that appeal to kids including a Trivia Challenge, King George Storybook based on the King George and His Ducky episode, Veggie Karaoke of “His Cheeseburger” and “Stuff Mart Rap,” a Stuff Mart Maze, Cast Bios, and an idea for a Family Fun Activity to learn about thankfulness.

About this movie

Madame Blueberry is sad because she is not satisfied with all the great things she has in her life. She wants to have more. Watch as her veggie friends teach her to be thankful for what she has.
