Not Even Fit For a Rainy Saturday Afternoon

Pros: Nothing

Cons: Everything, even the nude scene was uninspired and boring.

The Bottom Line: Do yourself a favor, When Will I Be Loved, it is not even fit for a rainy Saturday afternoon.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie''s plot.

I had heard a lot of good press about this movie, When Will I Be Loved, the (so-called) breakout movie for dancer-turned-actress and Party of Five alum Neve Campbell. Now after viewing only a portion of the film I have to wonder where their ardor for this rambling, plot-envious film finds its center.

Written and directed by James Toback When Will I Be Lovedcenters (I think) around Vera portrayed by Campbell (The Craft, Scream, Wild Things) and her boyfriend Fred portrayed by Ford Welles; the former is a rich college girl, while the latter is the consummate hustler. The former is trying to win an internship with one Professor Hassan Al-Ibrahim Ben Rabinowitz, portrayed ineptly by James Toback who teaches a course in West African studies or some such thing. It is never clear why Vera wants to work for this man, but they spend a full twenty minutes or so walking the streets engaged in inane dialog discussing the matter. And during these negotiations Vera finds time to give her number to a number of young men and then lies to the Professor about her intentions.

Meanwhile Fred is trying to farm out three blondes whom he has had sex with in the park, to Damon Dash, playing himself, as dancers / rappers(?). When that fails, the movie jumps where Fred is pimping out his girlfriend to an Italian telecommunication mogul who goes by the name of Count Tommaso Lupo portrayed by Dominic Chianese of The Sopranos. The Count is willing to pay Vera $100,000 to spend time with him, and of course Fred expects that the money will flow to him, since Vera is rich and all, and doesn’t really need the money. Of course she agrees and a story of revenge ensues.

Much was made of the Neve Campbell’s nude scenes at the beginning and end of the film as she leisurely showers and does magical things with a shower massager. Since I find no apt metaphor to assign the scenes that fit the movies premise, I can only surmise that the nudity was inserted to draw young males to the hackneyed film that tries very hard to be cutting edge, but in the end fails miserably. Neve Campbell’s performance, while somewhat engaging at time, was not enough to save this film from itself. Clearly the first two-thirds of the movie were absolutely meaningless, and endlessly boring and unfocused. I walked away thing the only reason Professor Hassan Al-Ibrahim Ben Rabinowitz mad an appearance was to give the director (and I use the term loosely) an opportunity to get his mug on film.

One last thought or question if you will: what does the title of the film, When Will I Be Loved have to do with this movie? Vera spend a considerable amount of time engaged in, casual sex, or trying to hook up, so its does not appear to me as though she is searching for love.

Do yourself a favor, When Will I Be Loved, it is not even fit for a rainy Saturday afternoon.
