It took me years to finally get a copy of this film, but when I did, it was worth the wait. Having enjoyed Cagney's cameo as George M. Cohan in The Seven Little Foys (only one scene, but he completely stole the limelight from Bob Hope) I couldn't get over how he lit up the screen with his light dancing feet! This film deserved every one of its 8 Oscar nominations, and it would have been criminal if James Cagney had been robbed of the gong for Best Actor. I could watch this film over and over, and …

I had no idea what I was getting into when I put "Yankee Doodle Dandy" into my DVD player. All I knew was that it's 98 on the AFI top 100 films, and it's starring James Cagney who won an Oscar for his role as George M. Cohan, playwright, composer, entertainer and patriot.  The film took place in the first world war era which made for great costumes, classic patriotic show tunes such as "Grand old flag"and "Over there", and some really impressive tap dance numbers from Cagney.
