Sure... we've all seen Shark Week on the Discovery Channel where great whites are jumping out of the water, but this is even crazier in my opinion.
First, the guy is solo.
Second, he's on a SUP (stand up paddle board) which is essential a big surfboard. Although in video it looks more like a traditional paddle board or surfski.
Third, he's in front of San Onofre nuclear power plant (which can be scary on its own)
Fourth, oh yeah... there's two frickin great white sharks under him
Fifth, he intentionally went out there to see the sharks.
I could keep going. As someone who SUPs and occasionally, when i've been out there by myself, and i've let my mind wander and start thinking what could be under me... i'm blown away by this footage. In one way it gives me a sense of security that this well established waterman, Chuck Patterson, knows it's safe enough to go out there and do that. But the other side of terrified and I will definitely be freaked out next time i'm in the water here in Southern California.
the day before I shot this video, i was SUP surfing with a couple friends and 2 sharks circled us for about 15 minutes. the next day, i decided to go back out at around the same time and take my GO PRO HD HERO camera (gopro.com) mounted on a 10 ft pole and do some exploring. Sure enough within 5 minutes a 9 ft shark came out of no where and circled twice and slapped his tail on my board before disappearing. then a minute later a 7 ft young juvenile Great White swam circles around me for 12 minutes. It was an unreal experience that I will cherish forever. chuckpattersonsports.com
