Love is in the air on Modern Family "My Funky Valentine", which was one of the best episodes of the season. All three families and the different generations have to deal with some facts of life (getting older, having no alone time, being occupied with work) and some love issues (breakups, competing for a girl, and the usual coat get stuck in the escalator while you are naked underneath).
Cam and Mitchell faced a usual problem in many couples relationships, when Cam was in the mood for love but Mitchell was to occupied with work. Cam decided not to let things ruin Valentine and to help Manny, our latin lover, who faced some Valentine challenges of his own when a guy at school took credit for his poem to a beautiful girl. The whole group, together with baby Lily, went to the restaurant to fight for Manny's love, who ended up single again but helped Mitchell give a speech of a lifetime.
A weaker story was Jay and Gloria's date, in which Jay had to hear jokes about the fact he is getting older from comedian David Brenner. While the show explored this direction in the past, this time Jay did not take the comments so lightly and Gloria and him left the show just in time to meet semi-naked Clair and Phil.
Which leads us to the best story of the night, which seemed to come from a good sex advice from Dr. Ruth to a couple who want to spice their love life after 17 years of marriage and Italian family restaurant - role playing. Although Phil wanted to be "Reginald Appleby, an English gentleman in town for a polo match." he eventually ended up as Clive Bixby, designer of "high-end electro acoustic transducers." Clair and Phil (Clive and Juliana) had some awkward moments trying to get into character, which is natural for first time role-playing, but ended up in Clair and Phil leaving the bar for a night in the hotel room.
The episode ended with a happy valentine for all couples, including of course Dylan and Haley.
Some great quotes from this episode:
Jay: I have to get old... you don't have to get fat
Phil: My wife is always so tired and she's always making lists of things for me to do.
Claire: Maybe if you did them she wouldn't be so tired.
Phil: Oh no, she could make lists for days.
Manny: Can we stop calling me little guy? I'm in the fortieth percentile.
