There are two La Quinta motels in Las Cruces, NM. I have stayed at both of them and find this particular one to be the lesser of the two. We pulled in late one night after 14 hours of driving. Apparently this is a common occurrence, as there was a line at the front desk. :-) The night person at the desk was doing his best, but he seemed to be having a bad evening. We finally got checked-in and the keys to our room.
Despite a high occupancy rate, we were able to find parking close to our rooms. The "locked" door to the hallway didn't lock, so we were able to walk right in without using our keys. This was convenient since we had all our luggage, but for security reasons it would have been nice if the hallway was locked. At least the rooms do open into a hallway rather than outside.
This motel is well-used and somewhat rundown. The air-conditioning in one of our rooms was not working, so this made for an uncomfortable summer night's stay. The fan was blowing, so we assumed it would be getting cooler but it never did.
This is a fairly large motel, so the continental breakfast was quite busy. The staff did not do a very good job at restocking the juices and the rest of the items. So it was pretty catch as catch can. In addition, the waffle iron was not working properly and burned all of the waffles despite proper use of the non-stick spray. So an uncomfortable night's sleep topped by a mediocre breakfast did not make for a pleasant stay.
If you can, get a room at the other La Quinta across the street. It is smaller, more modern, and better run. Our previous experience at that one was a lot better.
