I accompanied my girlfriend to afternoon tea at Paddington's tea room in Los Angeles. I was a bit wary of the experience, having never attended a tea before. We were taking out another couple for the birthday of a friend, so despite my reservations I decided to be a good sport and tag along.
I enjoyed aspects of the visit. The room itself was very peaceful, and you felt like you were part of a very secluded experience. It definitely had a strong English vibe because of all the surrounding memoribilia. The food was good but not great, and the deserts that accompanied the tea were exceptional. The tea itself was quite good, but you needed to pay extra to try the different tea varieties.
One major downside is the price -- afternoon tea is cheaper than high tea, but at $30 per person for what is basically an afternoon snack, you have to really enjoy what you are getting. The experience itself is designed to be leisurely -- expect to spend a few hours hanging out and talking.
