Cons: Have to take on a regular basis for real results.
The Bottom Line: Personally, I think the product is more effecitve as lessening the severity of colds than stopping them.
Being that my son is in childcare he is always bringing home some sort of a cold. I figure as long as the snot is wet, he must still be alive. Fortunately for him, I have found a variety of methods to cure the snot, but the cold just goes from him to me, time and time again.
Being that I am constantly giving presentations and consultations, I have to always be on top of my game. But if I’m constantly sick, I’m not only going to look horrible, I’m going to sound and feel horrible as well.
While I was out at the store this last fall, I discovered Airborne in the aisles. I was currently sick, but after reading the packaging, I figured it would be an excellent item to have around the house, to help prevent it the next time. I purchased a couple packages of the product while waiting for my background check to go through to get my Sudafed.
The Concept The basic concept of the product is to take it before you are around a large group of people or at the first signs of becoming sick. However, if you are a teacher or you work with a large group of people on a regular basis, this could mean that you are taking the product most every day. If you are like myself, and you have limited contact with people, except for a few key face-to-face situations on a regular basis, then you don’t have to take it quite as often.
How I used it My main goal was to not get sick. I was already eating lots of fruits and vegetables as I always do, drinking lots of water, and washing my hands frequently, so I wasn’t sure what else to do. My last ditch effort was to start taking Airborne. I decided to get serious about it, and I began taking the product every day. This of course wasn’t the most economical means of controlling colds, but I was tired of being sick all of the time. So, in order to ensure that I wasn’t going to be sick through the holidays, I started taking the product 1-3 times per day, everyday starting after Thanksgiving until Christmas.
The Taste The product is probably one of the more difficult products for me to take. I personally don’t like taking anything that I have to drink. The tablet is thrown in water and dissolves into a frothy brew. The taste itself is quite horrible regardless of what flavor you use and for myself personally, was difficult to swallow. I found the flavor to be so bad that I just couldn’t force myself to swallow it. In fact, I drink fiber every morning, and I can handle that with ease in comparison to the Airborne drinks. I don’t know if it’s the froth that bothers me, but something makes it difficult for me to choke the product down.
Effectiveness For myself, I really didn’t see that great of results. I have heard a lot of success stories with it, but I was still getting sick on a regular basis. I think the number of times that I would get sick was drastically reduced, but I don’t think it was enough to warrant the amount of money that I spend on Airborne on a monthly basis.
I would say however, that the length of time that I am sick has been reduced as well as the severity when I am sick. So I guess I could use that as a justification for using the product on a regular basis.
I did go from getting sick once every three weeks to once every two months. This is a good improvement from my normal health, but at 10 caplets per container, costing $7 per container in Alaska, that comes to 30 to 90 caplets per month or $21-$63 per month just on Airborne alone. This is when the product goes from being a simple purchase to an actual bill.

Final thoughts The product definitely works, but in order for it to be fully effective, you end up becoming a slave to it. I now have a daily practice revolving around Airborne to ensure that I get sick less frequently. It’s impossible to truly state it’s effectiveness as you don’t know if you would have gotten sick any more or less while on or off of the product, but the reality is that it contains the ingredients that generally are recommended for fighting and preventing sickness. So, it definitely should work, and it appears to work, but as I am still getting sick, I wouldn’t say it’s a cure all. If nothing else, it’s more of a means of slowing down the sickness and creating shorter time periods that you actually are sick.
If nothing else, I would say that I have had much shorter spans of sickness than before. Previously, I would be sick for upwards of ten days, but now, it only lasts a few days and generally I’m not quite as congested. So, for the purpose of just keeping me clear and breathing normally, I guess it is worth the money. Just remember, it’s not going to prevent them all.
