Boggle Me A Word

Pros: Great word and dice game that is addictive but simple.

Cons: A missing dice will impact the ability to play the game.

The Bottom Line:

This is a great word and dice game for a party or family night.

I have found that the games simplest in nature tend to be the most fun as they are not overwhelming the places with rules or specific details. One classic game that is one of my favorites is Boggle. This game was created by Hasbro in 1973 and is available in most retails stores that carry a toy section. This game is intended for those eight years of age or older and can accommodate two to six players. It is possible to play with more than six players however it makes point generation extremely difficult.

The goal of this game is very simple, accumulate the highest amount of points whether you are playing a single game or reaching a certain threshold as determined by some type of form of tournament that has been decided on by all players. The game includes a large plastic cube that contains a base with a 4x4 grid and a large cover. This grid allows for the 16 included dice to sit while the game is active. Each dice includes a different letter on each side. A 3-minute timer is also included to indicate the start and end of a round. Each player will need paper and some form of writing device to track their words.

The dice should be placed inside the cube and thoroughly shaken up until they have each landed in a spot. Each dice should have a letter pointing upwards. Each player will try and make words using the letters that now show on the grid. The words are generated using letters from dice that are touching. Each letter can only be used once and each word must have a minimum of three letters. Any word that is found (with the exception of proper nouns) in the standard dictionary is deemed as acceptable. Words within words are also acceptable. After three minutes of play, the round is over and all players are to put down their writing mechanism and cannot add to their list. Each player will then read the list of words to the group. Any word that appears on more than one player's list is crossed out and not able to have a point value. Once this has been completed and all repeated words have been eliminated, the points for each person are to be added. The amount of letters used to make a word will determine the point value.

3-4 letters: 1 point
5 letters: 2 points
6 letters: 3 points
7 letters: 5 points
8 or more letters: 11 points

The player with the highest amount of points wins or that total is added to the tournament score.

The letters in the cube are to remain consistent throughout the entire 3-minute game. If a word has multiple meanings, it is only given credit for the single use. If duplicated words are created using different paths, a point value will not be assigned to any player. If possible, plural forms of a word will be counted as a separate word.

Boggle can be a fun party game or for a family night as it can be played nearly anywhere and requires very little space. It is easy to understand and can be quite addictive. Most people have played this game sometime in their life and are familiar with the rules making it that much more easier to play. Kids and adults can play this game with one another or with someone of their own age group. This game can help improve the spelling and vocabulary skills of a child. I believe that children as young as six or seven would enjoy this game if they are comfortable with spelling and have a good vocabulary.

Boggle can also be played with modified rules if you feel like changing these up a bit. One change to the rules that I have played is that a word can be formed using dice regardless if they are touching or not. Although this may seem as though it is simplifying the game, it does allow for more complex words and the players will need to move much quicker during this three minutes to keep up. A winning game can be determined off of a single round or multiple rounds. The game can also be formulated so that the winner is determined by reaching a pre-established point value.

All in all, I highly recommend this game in your collection and it is perfect for a rainy day. This game will cost approximately $10.

I LOVE Boggle- my mom's the only one who will play with me and vice versa, so when she comes for a visit I always whip it out. Have you taken the Board Games poll?
