Wait... honey? Where?

Pros: Works great on relieving chapped lips.

Cons: Doesn't really have a flavor, goes on a bit rough.

The Bottom Line: If you are looking for an effective lip balm that uses natural ingredients, this one is great, but if you need flavor... blah!

I have been living in Alaska for the last three years of my life and during that time, I have gone through countless tubes of chap stick, lip balm, tubes, or whatever else I could come up with in order to beat the chapped lip feeling. With a winter that last 7-9 months out of the year, your lips are bound to get chapped. The problem however, is that each store carries their own selection of brands, flavors, and styles. So I always find myself having to try out new varieties so that I can get some sort of instant relief.

About two weeks ago, I started using the Burt's Bees Honey Lip Balm. I found this product at Fred Meyer, and although it was substantially more expensive than other brands, I figured I would give it a try. I had heard a lot about Burt's Bees products and had used some in the past and enjoyed them, so I figured this one would be perfect.

The Flavor
Probably one of the most important features of a lip product in my opinion is the flavor. If it has a horrible flavor, then I am not going to be able to use it. With Burt's Bees Honey, I found the flavor to be pretty boring, there's not even a hint of honey flavor, which I was expecting. I would say that it literally just tastes like wax and that's about it. I would say it's flavor is just as good as any unflavored lip product on the market.

The Smell
The smell isn't bad and it isn't good. You can smell a slight hint of honey, but not really enough to make it all that appealing. My fiance always tells me that after using it, she smells melting plastic. I'm not sure if you have ever smelled that before, but it isn't a pleasant smell, so I'm assuming that this particular lip balm isn't all that pleasant for others either.

How well does it work
As a lip balm, it doesn't really go on all that smooth in comparison to other products such as Blistex, however, I have found that it holds up much better than the other products, so it does go on better than most off brand or standard lip balm products. Personally, I think it has a slightly gritty feel and find that I have to wet my lips very slightly before application, or it goes on really rough. Personally, I like my lip balm to feel smooth and silky when applied, because that's how I want my lips to feel.

However, once you have it on, the product works great. I have no issues with chapped lips, the product doesn't melt as easily in my pocket all day as the other brands, and it does what it is supposed to do.

Where to purchase
I purchased this is Fred Meyer, and have seen it at other major retailers. You most likely won't find this at the smaller stores, as it's a much higher priced item.

Overall
I would say that as a lip balm, the product is great, but when you consider how well Blistex or Aveeno work, then compare the prices, Burt's Bees just doesn't stand up to the others. Blistex I have found out performs this product substantially having flavor, a silky feel, and a great scent as well. Not to mention the price is more than half of the Burt's Bees.

However, I would like to note that Burt's Bees uses a lot of natural ingredients, and utilizes recycled plastics in their tubes. They are a lot more concerned with the quality of their product and the protection of the environment in which they operate. So I guess that's a good reason to have a higher price, but it's not good enough to get me to switch permanently.
