Comcast versus Cox - Comcast loses

  • Sep 14, 2003

Pros: Cable and internet service bundled

Cons: Really Terrible service - only use them because I have to

The Bottom Line: Not recommend - poor cable reliability, service goes out frequently, Guide section goes out frequently.

Recently we moved to Los Angeles. After days of trying to figue out which cable company services our area (not an easy job) it was determined that COMCAST had the service contract. We had to call literally every cable company in the yellow pages to find out what company had the contract. What a time waster!

We have cable and internet bundeled together. We need the high speed internet access as we need for work and university.

The cable modem we already had from COX "did not work" with the COMCAST system and we had to purchase another modem. I frankly was dubious at that but had no alternative. To purchase the modem was about $100

The internet service works just fine it is the cable TV that I have major problems with. The service goes frequently with the annoying message "Station Unavaible - will resume shortly". This happens about 20% of the time. In the middle of a show - boom cut out time. Also the Guide section of COMCAST "is temporarily unavailable" which means you are unable to see the lineup on the cable stations.

Another drawback when you press the "Guide" on the remote, it takes you to the beginning channel which is 1. So, if I am eager to see the lineup on HBO and have the channel on HBO, pressing the guide takes me to channel 1 and you must scroll to channel 300-305 (which are HBO channels). Very inconvenient.

The remote that came with COMCAST has a TV guide button but when you press it - the service is "Unavailable - will resume shortly" message. That makes it impossible to see what is on TV and you scroll blindly through the channels. The guide they give you is very hard to deciper - useless so you flip through the channels blindly.

Most of the channels are fluff - public access channels, latin stations, chinese stations, Japanese stations, Russina TV. etc... You have to scroll through many many channels of fluff to get to the good premium stations like HBO. HBO is set for station 300 - 305.

Overall - the worst cable company I have ever subscribed to. If I could change I would but there is no alterative here in my neighborhood of LA.

Bottom line - AVOID AT ALL COSTS

Amount Paid (US$): 80.00

Pricey, but reliable. Plus, customer service has been great.
