Fine Soups, Fine Sandwiches, and Seriously Delicious Baked Goods
Mar 29, 2008
Pros: Fast food; fresh ingredients; great tasting chow; oh the cookies!
Cons: Expensive, but then again quality costs.
The Bottom Line: A bit pricy, but the food is good, service reasonably fast, and locations accessible.
I love sweets! There I said it, I copped to it; I own it! And my favorite sweet treatbaked that isare chocolate chip cookies, the chippier (is that a word, I dont think so, but Ill roll with it?) the better. And the bigger the better and the Corner Bakery sells them big, moist, and delicious. They sell other delicacies as well, but my favorite treats are cookies!
I first ran into the Corner Bakery Café (thats the official name) restaurant some eight years ago after my wife finished having dinner at Maggianos Little Italy; the restaurant was co-located. On the way out we stopped and picked up desert to be eaten at home.
The Corner Bakery started out as a true bakery and evolved into a full-service bakery and restaurant specializing in baked goods, and traditional lunch items; i.e. sandwiches, soups, and salads. The restaurant now serves breakfast as well. The typical Corner Bakery is a standalone affair with ample seating for individuals, couples, and families.
The baked goods are displayed in large appetizing glass displays and they can be ordered there, while other items are ordered from the lunch counter. The restaurants signature lunch dish is soup in a bread bowl; its my daughters favorite. I am partial to the tuna-fish sandwiches myself, and of course chocolate chip cookies for desert.
Currently the Corner Bakery has restaurants in Illinois, California, Colorado, Texas, Georgia, Virginia, Maryland, Washington D.C., Maryland, and Pennsylvania. In the Chicagoland area there are well over 30 locations including 16 in Chicago and one in Naperville close to where I live; yes.
As I mentioned above the Corner Bakery specializes in baked goods, breakfast entrees, fresh salads, pizzas, homemade soups & chili, specialty sandwiches, hot & toasty Paninis, and of course hearty pasta. Baked good include, well, breads of all shapes and tastes; cookies (weve been here before), of all kinds; muffins; bagels, Danish, cinnamon rolls, pecan rolls; cakes (whole, miniature, and slices) and all sorts of sweet breads.
For the most part the food at Corner Bakery is delicious. The baked goods are, well, good, baked daily with fresh ingredients and real sugar. And the cookies are always, always fresh, moist and delicious. Signature Fresh Breads: Olive Ciabatta, Cinnamon Raisin, Brioche, Harvest, Onion Rolls, Raisin Pecan, Sourdough Pretzel, Steakhouse Rye, Poblano Cheese, White Sandwich, and White Rye.
If there is one down side to the Corner Bakery experience, it is the prices of the food; they tend to be a little on the high side, but isnt everything these days. After all, $6.59 for a Chicken Pomodori Panini is a little excessive no matter how good it tastes. And a bowl of Big Als Chili checks in at ridiculous $4.99 a bowl!
Want breakfast? That will be $5.49 for an Anaheim Scrambler; $3.99 for The Commuter Croissant, and; $2.79 for the Swiss Oatmeal. Yes it will cost you a pretty penny to eat at the Corner Bakery, but quality, good tasting food costs.
Now that I have sworn off (for the most part) store bought mass produced cookies and other sweets, I limit myself to those bought fresh and either from the Corner Bakery, or Panera Bread. Thought I rarely stop in for lunch, the cookies and cakes are always on my list.
