I have been an active duty Air Force Unit Fitness Program Manager for quite some time now. During that time, I have been through numerous classes on a variety of different aspects of health, from smoking, to weight loss, to fad diets, to circuit/weight training, and virtually every other topic you could imagine.
As a UFPM, I am directly responsible for the management of the health and fitness for upwards of 800 personnel at any given period of time. This means that I administer all fitness testing, I counsel those that are having weight issues, and I aid in training those that desire the added assistance in obtaining muscle mass, losing weight, or whatever their goals are. Essentially, I am a personal trainer for the military.
This job of course is much different in the military however, than it would be in the civilian world. In the military world, we have to have a certain weight, and meet specific standards, whereas civilians are guided by their own desires. This means that in order for personnel to keep their jobs, I have to be on top of all of the best supplements, training guides, equipment, and methods of training that will yield the best results for each individual user's goals.
Throughout my time as a UFPM, I have tried so many different products myself, read about a large number of products, attended classes, and seen the direct results of members that have used these products. I know what works, what doesn't work, and what you have to do to make these products work.
CytoSport Muscle Milk The concept behind Muscle Milk is that we need more nutrients in order to properly build muscle. During this fasting period, your body will consume both fat and muscle in order to provide the energy required in order to repair itself.
With Muscle Milk, the claim is that by reversing the catabolic process, your body will focus on building the muscle, rather than destroying it. At the same time, the proper nutrients are given to muscles that will help them to grow over time. Without the proper nutrients, it doesn't matter how much you workout, your body won't be able to grow, as it won't be able to rebuild larger each time.
Performance I have been using this product for a great deal of time. Before starting this product, I found that I was unable to build muscle unless I worked out on a regular basis. I would run nearly 10-15 miles per day and I would lose weight easily, but the actually muscle development was lagging. This is when I decided I would have to seek out other means of developing my muscle, without having to increase my workouts substantially. Running that long already took up far too much of my life, and being a single parent, it would be impossible to do anything more than I was already doing.
I went to GNC (General Nutrition Center) and found CytoSport Muscle Milk. The product talked about a lot of variables that I already knew about, but never really thought about. The biggest thing I didn't consider was how many calories I burn while running, and since I don't eat during the two-three hours that I'm running, my body is starving for energy, and will convert anything, including muscle into an energy source. This of course meant that regardless of how much muscle I was building, my growth was slowed substantially by my body, which was feeding itself in order to support these long runs.
I also realized that when I run before I eat in the morning, I'm starving my body substantially, so that by the time I eat, I've already lost so much muscle that I have to work much harder to develop further muscle growth. I was fighting a losing battle. After using Muscle Milk for about 6 weeks, I started to notice better results. It definitely wasn't an instant thing, but after 6 weeks of using the product, my muscle development surged. In fact, I would say I probably lightened my workouts somewhat and would still put on more mass than I had in the entire 6 months of working out prior to that. It was a pretty incredible improvement, that I was truly amazed by. I honestly didn't think that the product would have the ability to work that well.
Flavors Muscle Milk over time has become so popular that it now comes in virtually every flavor imaginable. I keep probably 4-5 different flavors in my house at all times, so that I always have some variety. There are just some days when I have to have something completely different, so I try to keep things as varied as possible, and I switch out the flavors all of the time. The mere number of options really makes sticking to the program substantially easier. If I didn't have so many options, I'm sure that I would have become sick of the product a long time ago and wouldn't have anywhere near the same results as I currently have.
Chocolate Milk - Probably one of the easiest of the drinks for me to make is the chocolate milk. The powder stills in really easily, and makes for a great drink, much like that of any other chocolate milk. I ALWAYS USE MILK with this drink though, because nothing else is quite right.
Strawberry Banana - This is one of the best flavors that they offer. I get sick of it rather fast, but I use it as a treat every now and then, rather than constantly drinking this one. It is relatively sweet tasting, but tastes really good when mixed with vanilla ice cream.
Chocolate Mint Chip - Personally, I don't enjoy this flavor as much. I still drink it for variety, but it's one of my least favorite flavors. The flavor isn't very fulfilling, and becomes more of a chore to drink than a pleasure. I think it tastes best when mixed with chocolate mint ice cream. If you don't use that, then the flavor isn't strong enough and becomes work to drink.
Chocolate Caramel Pecan - Bla! I can't drink this one. I'm not sure why, but I can taste the pecans, and I think it takes away from the chocolate caramel taste, which actually by itself would be really good.
Orange Cream - I'm not so much a fan of this flavor. This is too close to the taste of Metamucil, which I also take on a daily basis, and just makes it too much orange for me. The flavor is a pretty powdery orange flavor, so needless to say, I'm not a fan of it.
Strawberry Milkshake - I love this milkshake! I always add fresh strawberries and bananas to it to really give it some flavor, and you can drink it with or without ice cream, but I highly recommend whole milk at a minimum, as that really gives it an extra bold flavor that is just great.
Vanilla Cream - The vanilla cream is alright, but it just doesn't have a lot of flavor. I generally add fresh fruit to this one, to create something delicious. It's great for that purpose. The vanilla cream however, has a strange taste in my opinion with regular milk, so I always add Vanilla flavored Soy or Rick milk. Doing that really brings out the flavor, which can be quite delicious if done right.
Banana Cream - Rich banana flavor, but not so much that it is overpowering. This is good if you add in one half of a fresh banana, and use milk. With ice cream it just tastes a bit too rich.
Mocha Joe - This one is sort of fun in the morning. I generally drink it as a night cap. I take this, add in some Komora, Kahlua, or Irish Cream and the flavor is great! Use milk though to make the product, and add in the liquor for a little extra impact. This is my weekend drink generally. It helps keep me healthy while at the same time allowing me to drink with my friends.
Cookies 'n Cream - This one is great, unfortunately my son loves it as well, so he's always trying to drink it whenever he sees me making it. I personally think this one tastes good no matter how you make it, but generally I add a bit of cookies and cream ice cream into it to really give it a powerful flavor kick.
Peanut Butter and Chocolate - This one is a bit strong to me, there's just too much sweet happening with it. What I do is I add in vanilla ice cream or milk to tame it down a bit more. I always do a double dose of whatever I'm adding, so that it weakens the flavor a bit. It's great when you do that, but without it, it's hard to drink an entire serving, as it's so rich.

Final Recommendations This product isn't for everyone. What I have found personally is that if you are using this product, you really need to be active, because it isn't calorie free. There are a lot of items in this product that give it quite a few calories, so if you are consuming multiple drinks per day, then you are going to do more damage than good. Lucky for myself, I do quite a bit of running, so I am able to burn off all of those calories without much worry.
This product is really meant for the moderate to heavy exerciser, athlete, weight lifter, etc. If you are just doing aerobics in your living room, I would avoid the product, because you aren't going to burn as many calories as drinking this product will take in. Make sure that you are only taking this as a supplement to an active workout, and controlled eating program.
Also, I would make sure that you never drink this within 3-4 hours of exercise. My main reasoning is because the product creates a heavy lump in your stomach and when you exercise it will feel like a ball rolling around in your stomach, which can be quite uncomfortable and could potentially be quite embarrassing as well.
I can pretty much be considered a newbie to the diet/fitness scene, but I am confident enough to write about the great taste AND results that I enjoy when I drink Muscle Milk.
