The Bottom Line: "Now my head is really spinning, maybe now I'll show some willin' To help you with the house work, if you want to" ~Tintern Abbey
We finally finished a long anticipated project, getting hardwood floors installed throughout our home. We had started over a year ago by completing the common areas but we still had carpet in the bedrooms, which meant we used two type of vacuums for our cleaning. Now we can boot them out and use our Dirt Devil M082700 Bagless Canister Vac exclusively.
Features/Specs: ~12 Amp motor ~Bagless ~HEPA filter ~Variable power ~Telescoping wand ~20 ft cord w/automatic retractor ~Upholstery tool ~Crevice tool ~Dusting brush ~Carpet nozzle ~Only 10 lbs total weight ~Swivel casters
There was some assembly required when we took it out of the box. The wand and hose needed to be snapped together. Really? That took like 2 whole seconds. Took longer to open the dang box. It does have a 'tools-on-board' attachment which I decided not to use because I wanted to be able to lay the floor nozzle flat to reach under the sofas and beds. The tools on board attachment affixes to the wand, which would restrict clearance.
It really doesn't matter because the main tools you would use, crevice & upholstery, are snapped into place on the side of the vacuum and are easily available.
One of many features I liked was the telescoping wand. For normal use it measures 31" but will telescope to 42" - great for reaching all those condos that accumulate in the far corners near the ceiling. We could almost but not quite reach them with our other vacuums but generally had to resort to hefting it up [extremely heavy] and climbing on a small stool to reach the upper corners. Not now!
Our Shark vacuum had several nasty habits. It constantly overheated after only a couple minutes of use; the cord would retract on its own and unplug itself from the outlet; and you absolutely could not use it on a carpet. Fairly worthless as far as a vacuum cleaner except for tile or hardwood floors. This new Dirt Devil has a firmly attached cord, 20' long, with automatic retraction with just a push of a button.
It also has variable heights on the floor nozzle for several lengths of carpet naps or hard floor surfaces ... like our new spiffy hardwood floors and tile floors. We do have an area carpet in our dining area, so we will have to use the carpet feature periodically since the dogs use this area to munch their rawhide bones and don't always clean up after themselves.
But the best part? No more dang bags. I am so through with bagged vacuums I could spit. Even though I don't like to observe our filth gathered in the clear canister, I can deal with it as opposed to one of those stinking bags breeding who knows what and smelling like skunk droppings. To say nothing of wallowing around on the floor, fighting with the bag demons that design those bags to be impossible to change.
Another fantastic feature; the weight. Overall weight to carry is slightly over 10 pounds, but operational weight - pushing it around - is only two pounds. I'm old, I have breathing problems and rheumatoid arthritis; Diane has had 3 major back surgeries and two shoulder surgeries and is soon that have another back surgery. Anytime we can find something that does a good job and takes little effort on our part is a blessing.
Can I say I look forward to vacuuming? Well, no, but at least it is no longer a back breaking and frustrating chore with our new baby.
