Yay/Nay on the Flip

Rating:

1. Appearance:

Yay: Sleek, smooth, shiny glossy black finish; trim and slim
Nay: Fingerprints!!!

2. Weight:

Yay: Only 3.3 ounces

3. Responsiveness:

Yay: The buttons are touch sensitive, and they light up. It's a lot easier to start and stop filming, view and delete videos than the earlier model.

4. Specs:

Yay: 60 minutes recording time; HD-Quality video; 4GB memory

5. Battery:

Yay: Charges using a USB port. On-screen battery indicator tells you when it needs charging. Charges while you're uploading the day's footage to the computer. Does not use regular batteries or require a separate charger.
Nay: You'll have to make sure it's charged before you leave home if you're not toting your laptop. No chargee, no filmee.

6. Charging:

Yay: Easy if you're using a laptop. The USB arm flips up by sliding a button. The arm is at the top of the camera, so it's lying in a horizontal position when connected to the laptop.
Nay: Not easy if you're using a desktop, particularly when you already have the receiver for your Logitech Cordless Desktop Wave Pro (920-000919) plugged in. I tried using a USB extension cable, but got a message on the display that said it was too hot and had stopped charging.

7. Uploading:

Yay: Just connect to your computer

8. Making movies:

Yay: All your clips are displayed on the computer screen, and you can edit them to select just the parts you need for your movie. Dragging and dropping puts the chosen clips together for final editing. There's a choice of 7 tunes you can use for your videos, or you can select your own. You can upload straight to the internet.
Big Yay: You can fiddle with the background sound, making your added music softer or louder, or taking out the background sound altogether. This is very useful in situations where a perfectly good shot is ruined by the sound of Aunt Bertha's burp, Uncle Fester's fart or cousin Clint's curse word. You can also use this tool to make yourself sound like P!nk, Pharrell or Pavarotti on your next karaoke video.
Nay: You can't use the same video clip twice in one movie. You can't change the fonts for the title or add subtitles. The software doesn't offer a choice of movie styles like the older version.

9. Misc yays and nays

Comes with lightweight soft cloth case that's pretty good at rubbing off fingerprints and stuff

Doesn't work well in low light situations

Zoom is limited

Not good with close-ups, especially graphics. Don't bother trying to film the fine print or even the logo of that new widget that you're thinking of buying - you won't be able to read it when you get home.

If you have shaky hands you'll need a tripod.

Conclusion:

This is an excellent camcorder for recording memories and capturing embarrassing moments. Totally idiot-proof, amazingly lean and light, and completely portable, you can easily film, save and store your directorial triumphs, or share them on the web.

It does have a few limitations, but most of them can be worked around.

Quick Tip by . April 12, 2011
It's been a roller-coaster news day. I was delighted to hear that Glenn Beck has been canceled, though they apparently denied the requests for him to be shot too, but dismayed to hear that Cisco is canceling the Flip video. My parents will finally have no choice but to recognize that their cell phones have cameras that do exactly the same thing.

This camera is something else.  It is no bigger than the average cell phone and is very light weight.  It comes with a sleek velvet material case to protect it when you transport it to film your movie.    The screen on the back is a little smaller than I expected but I manged to deal with it because the quality is unlike any other video camera i have used.  You are able to hit the power button and less than three seconds you are ready to film.     I …

Pretty cool little videocam gadget, but Canon's digital cameras do as good job as this is. Not much reason to carry yet yet another device.

To understand the miniaturization of video equipment you have to go back to the first moon landing in July 1969. Just in case the lunar module didn't perform as expected the astronauts set up a video camera and trained it on their spaceship. The usual count down proceeded and then suddenly the thing was gone. Lunar gravity being one sixth of that of earth and the module being so light it was on screen about a half a second. Later versions had motorized tracking devices to follow it as it ascended …

The Flip Video Camcorder is a nice piece of electronics. For many people this may be the only camcorder that they will ever need. However, while this version is pretty good - I would recommend considering the newer models (see video review).    Pros-    - Handy little camera - easy to carry around  - Decent movie quality - while it is not great it is certainly good enough for YouTube  - Included software is pretty intuitive  - …

The Flip Camera is what it is: a lightweight, easy to carry, easy to use video camera that does what it's supposed to do for not a lot of money. It comes complete with a usb plug so it can be connected directly to a computer for easy uploading (no hunting for a cord), and it works with both a pc and a mac (I've used both). It's so easy to use that I've let my students at school use it to cover events and then upload them independently of me, and they never have an issue with how to operate it. In …
