Pros: Affordable, easy to use, and is loaded! Prints, scans, copies, views and prints photos.

Cons: Smallish ink cartridges

The Bottom Line: Amazing features for the price. Works well and is easy to use. Costs only a little more than a basic printer.

When our current printer died, we headed off to Office Depot, Sam's Club, Walmart in search of a new printer. I can type and I know the functions of a PC well enough to accomplish most of the tasks I need, but staying up with the latest and greatest trends doesn't hold much fascination for me. Since I'm not all that well versed on what's hot and what's not I tend to ask alot of questions. It was my lucky day at Office Depot...the local HP rep happened to be in the store and approached us while the young Office Depot clerk went searching for answers to our questions. After explaining how the printer would be used and our budget, the HP rep showed us an impressive HP Photosmart C4280 printer/scanner/copier, and was able to answer every question I asked. I was amazed that this much printer was available in our price range, and that it was compatible with our aging PC. For well under $100, we can print black & white or color prints, black & white or color copies, black & white or color scans, as well as preview and print photos from a memory card. I came in looking for a reasonably priced quality printer! My wife was amazed at the new capabilities we brought home. We now had many functions of a home office for a very reasonable price. No more running to the library to make copies!

Setup was fairly straight forward and took about 20 minutes. The USB cable from our previous HP printer worked with the C4280 so it was just a matter of connecting the wires, plugging in the power pack, and following the installation instructions prompted by the included CD. We have a Kodak "printer dock" and haven't tried the photo features of the HP yet, but the printer, copier, and scanner functions are very intuitive and easy to use from just a glance at the display buttons. Printing is quick. The C4280 will print up to 30 pages per minute. Copying is fairly fast and can accept up to 50 copies per command. Scans take a bit longer...maybe 60-90 seconds each. The delays creating a scanning file are no doubt impacted by the limitations of our 6 year old PC, but delays are reasonable. The 4280 is so easy to use that I really haven't sat down and read through the manual thoroughly. I expect there are many functions that we haven't tapped into yet.

The 4280 came with one set of ink cartridges that lasted us close to 3 months. Printer ink is a big profit maker for the entire industry, but I didn't think it was any more expensive than ink for other printers....it's just the way it is, and is undoubtedly part of the reason the printers themselves are so affordable (relatively). The C4280 comes with HP's 1-year limited manufacturer's warranty.

We've been using the Photosmart C4280 for about 5 months now and have been thoroughly satisfied. We're down right giddy about the new capabilities this printer has brought to our PC. It's convenient, fun, fast, works well, and is reasonably priced. It's been a terrific addition for us. I'd be inclined to give the 4280 a 5-Star rating, but because it was about two steps up the line from what we were previously looking at, I honestly don't know how this unit stacks up to it's direct competition. I do know that's it's worked out very well for us, and didn't cost significantly more than a more basic machine.
