Pros: solid, full size keyboard, matte screen, large cache, tiny keyboard light

Cons: no hdmi connectors, video card is just okay

The Bottom Line: A sturdy solid notebook with wifi and great performance. A fantastic deal while still available.  This is a lot of notebook for the price with a MATTE SCREEN!

When my mom asked me to accompany her on a trip for three weeks this summer, I suddenly realized that I did not have the ability to keep up with my online work.  Although I have built and worked on computer system for many years, I never could bring myself to purchase a laptop or notebook of any time.  They seemed so slow, and cumbersome, and quite frankly, I was not in the mood to deal with the hassle of laptops.  Desktops were fine enough for me.

Now, however, this was a horse of a different color.  I needed to keep up with online situations and websites while out of town, so I had to figure out how to get a good laptop to take with me.

When I went out to look at different laptops, I was not overly impressed.  I did not have much money to invest in a laptop, so my options were small.  I did not like the shiny finish on the screens, the keyboards were too flimsy or hard to type on, and the cases also seems chintzy as well.

I did not find anything that remotely interested me except for a Toshiba that just came out a few months ago, but not enough time had passed to find out the drawbacks so even that was not appealing to me.

I planned to take my time purchasing a laptop because I did not want something that I would regret later.  Then I came across a deal that I could not refuse and ended up with a fantastic notebook computer.

WHAT IS THE HP ELITEBOOK LIKE?

I found an HP ELITEBOOK 2350p NOTEBOOK which usually sells in the $1500+ price range.  This line of computers have been known to be very rugged and well equipped to serve well for the business needs of customers who need a good solid notebook computer which can take some hits.

COMMENTS

PERFORMANCE
I am running XP Pro instead of Vista on this system and have not upgraded the memory at this point.  The system runs well and is not as slow as many of the notebooks I have used, but it is not as fast as my 5 year old desktop.

I do notice increased performance when I run this off of the AC Adapter.

BATTERY CHARGING
I have been getting about 5 hours working time on the HP ELITEBOOK 2530p if I am working with wifi running many open windows in Firefox browser along with Excel running at the same time.  I have also had videos or live streaming sound at the same time without draining any faster

PROCESSOR & HEATING UP
Warmth is not an issue with this notebook for me.  It does get pretty warm at times, but nothing to alarm me or hurt me at all.  As for fans, I can hear them but I have to listen very carefully.  They are almost silent.

SPEAKER
Speaker is located in the center bottom which can be a bit tough to hear in a noisy place.  I find that propping it up a bit helps.

SCREEN
Wow, I love this screen.  It is matte in appearance and shiny problems are not at all an issue for me.  I LOVE this screen- it is easy to use and see without distractions.

VIDEO
This does not come with HDMI sockets so if you plan to do presentations on a large screen, it won't work out welll.  This video card is decent for business work, but not for anything that you need high definition detail for, or if you plan to use a large screen for presentations.

CASE
The case is brushed metal which does not scratch easily.  It is very sturdy.  Although I can not sit on this computer with confidence, dropping it is not as detrimental as it could be with many netbooks or notebooks.

KEYBOARD
The keyboard is not flimsy at all.  Keys are not too slick or too sticky at all.  They are easy to work on even though I find some problems with long fingernails often hit keys I don't want to hit. I work best on an ergonomic layout so this set up working decently for me is wonderful.  I have a hard time on most keyboards.

I don't like the enterkey or the delet key's locations. I hit them often.

The fingerprint scanner can be a real pain- if my hand runs over it, it launches off a security video which is totally annoying.  I fixed that by placing a black sticker the same size as the small rectangular opening over it and I have no more problems.

TOUCHPAD
I have worked on a touchpad for as long as I have been working on computers, as I dislike mice.  This touchpad is hard to get used to.  The third of the touchpad to the right has an auto scroll area which really frustrates me because I constantly hit that instead of the rest of the touchpad.

I plan to check the drivers to see if that can be adjusted.  I am still trying to work with this as it is right now, but the scrolling really goes a bit nuts when I am on internet sites with scrolling boxes inside other scrolling boxes.

It can be a challenge at times, but I am still working on it before I get totally frustrated.

There is also a little stick pointer area (I forget the official name of it)
in the center with rubberized top in the center of the keyboard so you can roll your finger around on it if you prefer that type of pointer manipulation.

SECURITY
I have not started using these features as they are not important to me right now.

SIZE AND WEIGHT

This notebook is heavier than some due to the metal housing, but I am glad for it- it is sturdy.  As for the size- it is small and easy to carry, but the keyboard is full size and easy to use.  Screen is easy to read and clear from all angles.

DVD DRIVE
This notebook does not  have an internal DVD ROM inside, but I opted not to get one inside for a few hundred dollars less.  I plan to get an external DVD Rom and writer in the future for this system.  For now, I am using a flash drive to transfer files and install things.

It would be handier to get the one with the DVD drive installed as they are offered with and without.

REALLY COOL FEATURE

Silly I know, but this HP ELITEBOOK 2530p has one of the coolest little gizmos- a tiny light which you can turn on that pops out of the frame and it shines down on the keyboard to make dark room typing easier.  I just LOVE thisl  It is not too bright, but it still enables me to type at night without disturbing my sleeping husband.

FINAL COMMENTS

I got this amazing little dream machine from a site called

www.lowmarkup.com

This machine usually sells for between $1500 and $2000, and I got it in almost brand new condition for $499.  Apparently, they are coming out with a new model so these are going for an amazing price right now.  They come with a 1 year warranty compared to a brand new one which has 3.

My machine is like new and I really love this.  The large cache gives this machine screaming speed compared to the smaller caches that are usually in machines similar to this.

This is not the fastest notebook I have ever seen, but when I upgrade the memory I imagine it will scream by just fine.  The ELITEBOOK 2530p is one of the faster notebooks and most solid laptop style computers I have had the pleasure to work on.

This can also be upgraded to a 9 cell lithium ion batter if you like, but it will be heavier and more cumbersome.  The 6 is just fine for me- and the battery sits in there very securely too.
