Huggies Natural Care Baby Wipes Let Me Naturally Care for My Baby

The Bottom Line: These wipes work well for my family. The inlusion of vitamin E and aloe make them a favorite.

As a first-time mother to a 3 1/2 month old baby boy I haven't yet been around the block when it comes to baby-care.  In fact, you could say that I've only just begun the very long walk around a very, very big block.  It is true that I've tried a few brands of diapers and wipes (not to mention many other baby care products) but I'm definitely no expert.  While I generally do more of the baby bathing and virtually of the nursing (though dad and sitter take care of bottle-feedings when I'm not around) I will come clean say I only do about half of the diaper changing.  Let's be honest here: no one enjoys changing diapers, and when I'm not the only capable adult around I always offer the task up to the others (who, surprising, often take the bait).  There are some products that take away some of the pains of changing diapers, both for the changer and the baby.  Huggies Natural Care Baby Wipes happens to be this type of product for me and my family.

Huggies Natural Care Baby Wipes come in a variety of packaging types and quantities, including portable soft packs, hard travel cases, 'normal' sized plastic boxes, and refill packs/cases.  While I've used many of these I most often purchase the case of three resealable refill bags; the bags have 240 wipes each, totalling 720 wipes in a case.  At about $20 I think this is a fair buy.

The wipes claim to be "cushiony thick" enabling gentle cleaning.  They have aloe and vitamin E to keep skin healthy (and thus baby and parents happy).  These wipes can be purchased both scented and unscented (I always buy unscented).

Yes, there are Ingredients in these baby wipes, and they are (as stated on the packaging):
Water, Potassium Laureth Phosphate, Glycerin, Polysorbate 20, Tetrasodium EDTA, DMDM Hydantoin, Methylparaben, Malic Acid, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E is in the form of Tocopheryl Acetate).

My Experience

Wiping a baby's bottom bears more potential for trouble than it first may seem.  For one thing, the wiper must pay attention to the waste and where it has hidden... accidentally leaving bits in little baby crevices is not a good thing and can lead to infections.  For another thing, the wiper must also take care to wipe from front to back, especially if the wipee is female.  At this point, my baby's stools are still fairly wet, meaning that the poop pretty much gets all over his bottom.  Because he's a boy and because baby boys have the capabilities of fountaining when you least expect it I always take one folded wipe and place it over him so I don't become a spray victim.  I generally prepare a fresh diaper by opening it (and dousing it with powder, if necessary) beforehand so I don't have to leave my baby exposed and possibly cold for too long.  After removing his diaper I usually can quickly wipe him down with the shield wipe, though if he's been messy I sometimes leave the shield-wipe in place and use a new wipe, then use the shield-wipe for cleaning up any leftover mess.  Rarely I need a third wipe, but it does happen on occasion.  When he was a newborn I generally always had to use three or sometimes more wipes, partially because I was a novice, and partially because newborns have bowel movements very frequently. 

Upon dispensing, the wipes are very moist, but not so much so that they are dripping.  The wipe is thick and has a sort of embossed bear motif on it.  I find that the embossed or textured pattern helps to catch the waste when I wipe.  The thickness keeps from letting waste seep through and makes the number of wipes necessary minimal.  The unscented wipes really are mostly unscented.  Often when a product claims to be unscented you still catch a bit of a perfumey whiff; these wipes do have a slight scent, but I would describe it as, well, water, believe it or not, for lack of something better.  It's not perfumey, but there is something there when you sniff.  I never find the odor offensive.  My son sometimes gets what I guess is irritation from the moisture or waste in his diaper just within his crack (if there's a more appropriate word for this, I'm sorry I didn't use it), but he's never gotten full-on diaper rash.  His rear and private parts have never had bumps of excessive redness of any kind, and as far as I can tell this slight irritation has never bothered him too much.  I assume this can partially be attributed to luck, but I also think the inclusion of vitamin E and aloe in these wipes and the fact that I use these wipes more often than any others can be attributed, and baby and I are both very thankful for this.  I'll admit that I've used these wipes on parts of my skin as well, and they are very comfortable in texture and never irritating.

The refillable version of these wipes is very handy.  The wipes can be separated into a pile the size of your choosing, and fit into almost all (even non-Huggies) containers.  The bag is resealable and keeps them from drying up... in fact, a box of 720 generally lasts us about a month (I think) and they've never dried up on us.

While I overall like these wipes very much, there are a few minor things that I don't like.  While I understand baby wipes are supposed to be moist, and these definitely aren't dripping by any means, I sometimes wonder if they're too moist.  Sometimes when wiping waste from my baby's bottom it just kind of gets pushed around; a slightly dryer wipe would probably soak some of it up.  Of course, I'm a novice, so this may just be normal.  Another concern is that these wipes are perforated, and while they almost always tear away easily for those one-handed tears, they sometimes are very stuck together, and even a two-handed tear leads to some shredding.  While it's not a concern to me, some may be concerned that the unscented wipes do have a slight scent.  I'm pretty sure that's unavoidable, and it doesn't bother me any, but I feel I should mention it.

I'm very pleased with these wipes, and the complaints I have are very minor and certainly would be found in other brands of wipes.  The addition of aloe and vitamin E make these wipes better in my opinion, as they seem to keep my baby's bottom in tip-top shape.  Many of the other ingredients are organic and they all are relatively harmless.  The price is right, as is the thickness, moisture, and cleaning factor.  I will continue to buy these until and unless something better comes along.
