Solid Computer Security Package

Over the years I have used several different computer security packages: McAfee, Norton and most recently BitDefender. With the exception of the last one, I have been generally satisfied with all of them. In fact, it was a very negative experience with BitDefender that spurred me to do a little research on the best PC security tools, and that's when I came across the name of Kaspersky. According to several online forums that I consulted, this was considered to be one of the best security packages out there. I tend to be very cautious when it comes to my online behavior, but these days it's impossible to completely avoid all the nasty malware that is circulation around. Hence, I want to have the best software protection that I can get. I am not an expert on security software, but thus far my experience with Kaspersky has been mostly very positive.

I installed Kaspersky Internet Security on three Windows PCs: Dell Windows 7 Ultimate desktop with AMD 3600+ 2.00 GHZ CPU, 1.00 GB RAM and 250 GB hard drive, HP Windows 7 Ultimate laptop with Intel Core 2 Duo 2.00 GHz CPU, 2.00 GB RAM and 250 GB hard rive, and Acer Aspire 1 Windows XP Home Edition netbook with Intel Atom 1.60 GHz CPU, 1.00 GB of RAM and 160 GB hard drive. The installation was for the most part straightforward, although I did experience some minor glitches with my laptop and netbook. These could be attributed to the age of these two machines though. Since I don't have a DVD rom on my netbook, I had to transfer the installation files from the CD onto a USB stick. This was more or less straightforward, but the installation from the USB had more error messages than the other two setups. It would be useful if this software came on a USB stick to begin with (they are getting really cheap) or if the installation program gave you an option of creating a USB installer the way some other three-computer software packages do.

During the installation a new version of the installer was downloaded from the Internet. This newer installer has probably taken care of several bugs that other users have reported.

On Windows 7 machines Kaspersky installs a gadget on your desktop, which takes up a sizable amount of desktop real estate. Nonetheless, so far I have not found it too obtrusive, but if I do it will be a straightforward thing to remove it.

After installing it on all of my computers, I had run a full security scan of all of my files. This takes between five and twenty hours to perform, depending on the number of files that you have and the processing power of your machine. Kaspersky was able to detect a couple of malicious programs that my other security software had missed, but this is to be expected: the definition libraries vary, as do tollerances for various kinds of malware.

The security program runs in the background, only demanding your attention in the event of suspicious behavior by a program or a service. So far I have not noticed any slowdowns in the performance of my computers. I have been able to run all the programs and open all the files in the same manner that I had always done.

The only major issue that I had with Kaspersky had to do with my inability to access my Windows Home Server when the default Firewall settings were implemented. It took quite a bit of tinkering before Kaspersky started playing nice with my WHS. I know that WHS is not all that mainstream, but would like to see that comprehensive PC security software be able to handle it more easily.

Overall, I am pretty satisfied with Kaspersky Internet Security. I would recommend it as a suitable alternative to the better-known names in business.
