Crazy kids and their crazy fish products...

Pros: good smell, kids like it, detangles hair, no tears

Cons: smell more like the candy variation of the fruits than the actual smell.

The Bottom Line: When you can find a product that your children will truly enjoy using, then you definitely have a winner, and my son loves this one!

Getting my son to take a bath has never really been a challenge, and neither has getting him to wash his hair. He has always been somewhat receptive to the entire process, making it extremely easy on me and him to accomplish our nightly routines. We have tried a large variety of products however, just to keep things fresh and to mix them up. My son has never shown any sort of interest in what type of shampoo we used, he's never shown any type of indifference over a product before, but for some reason, once we tried Loreal Kids shampoos, I can't use anything else.

It all started when we were at the store one day. My son was somewhat in a bad mood all day, so I told him that we would go out and get him something at the store. This always works as a means of keeping him calm, because he knows that he is going to get something and not just watch me as I look at fishing poles or something along those lines. This never means that he is going to get a toy, it just means that he is going to leave that store with something in his hands.

Knowing that we needed some more baby shampoo, I wheeled the cart around to the baby section and started reading the different shampoos. My son seemed to show particular interest to the only container that had a seemingly different shape than the rest, the Loreal Kids products. My son who is a huge fan of 'fish' and 'bears' started saying "fish, fish". To my amazement, he was able to tell that the strangely shaped bottle was loosely in the shape of a fish. So, I figured, 'what the hell' and grabbed a bottle of it. Of course he got super excited, and I let him smell it, and immediately he said, "Deet, Deet", which of course means to 'eat', but after some careful explanation, I think he understood that it was shampoo.

The product
Later that night after purchasing this new shampoo, I threw my son's spaghetti sauce covered body into the jacuzzi, started up the jets, and let him go to town tossing water out of the tub, throwing boats, etc. It came time to throw the shampoo into his hair to loosen up the sauce that was now caked into his scalp and dried, so I knew it wasn't going to be a fun task ahead of me. I wet his scalp first, loosened the sauce, and applied the shampoo, working up a nice lather in the process. My son of course started to smell the Watermelon scent of the shampoo and immediately responded, "Deet, Deet" and I had to explain to him that I washing his hair with the fishy. He of course, wanted to see the fishy, so I gave him the container while I rinsed out his hair.

The product itself when in extremely smooth, created a nice lather, and really didn't require much shampoo in order to make that happen. I definitely applied far more than was required to do the job. I'm thinking a dime sized application is more than enough for the average child. Washing the shampoo out was even easier than the application. It seemed like I could have gone with one good super sized cup of water and he would have been soap free, however I threw a couple more over his head just to ensure that everything was how it should be.

My son of course keeps his eyes open during the process and opens his mouth so that he can taste the shampoo or something. The shampoo, even though some of it went past his eyes, didn't make him cry, didn't make him rub his eyes, past the initial rub, and didn't seem to bother him in any way.

Effectiveness
At the time my son was sporting a fauxhawk, which is a mohawk that can be left down and will still look like a regular hair cut. It's sort of the modern day mullet in a sense, but a whole lot less obvious. The shampoo was worked in fairly well, and was capable of removing all of the day's dirt and spaghetti sauce with relative ease. My son generally has an issue with his fine hair getting tangled up a bit on top, and with the shampoo, I found that combing his hair before bed seemed much more manageable than it would normally be.

The shampoo also left his hair feeling super soft, and really made me consider why I was using a standard adult shampoo.

Fragrance
The watermelon smell of the shampoo was fairly strong during application, but quickly disappeared as I washed it out. The smell was fairly pleasing, while at the same time was a little bit on the annoying side of things. I have sense tried several different products of theirs and have found that this scent is bar far the least attractive. The watermelon smell is more the watermelon smell we associate with candy, not with the fruit itself.

The smell was mild after his bath and after his hair had dried, but it was still obvious that it was there. I found myself looking around the house, trying to figure out who was chewing watermelon gum for about an hour after his bath.

Regardless, he seems to really enjoy the product and the smell that comes along with it. Whenever I apply the shampoo, he immediately requests the 'fishy' realizing that this smell is associated with the 'fishy' bottle that it comes from.

Some of the other scents that I have seen so far or tested myself but are not limited to :

Pear, orange, cherry almond, strawberry, honeydew, mango, and melon.

Personally, I have found that the best smelling one during and after the bath is Pear and cherry almond. I think that the honeydew probably has the lightest of the smells and is my favorite after the bath process is over. All of the other smells will leave your child smelling like chewing gum for several hours.

Where to purchase
I found this product at Fred Meyer, which is essentially a west coast retail chain, but I know that you can also purchase the product on drugstore.com, as that's where I buy the large majority of my products, because it is cheaper than purchasing them in the stores here in Alaska, even with shipping added onto the price.

Wal-Mart also has the product, but I refrain from buying anything from their stores that I can get somewhere else. The only thing nice about Wal-Mart is that they have a much larger selection in the different scents that they offer in the product.

Final Thoughts
I guess from a child's perspective Loreal 2 in 1 shampoo is great, because it is their own product. I know my son, although he is less than 2 years old, loves knowing that it is his shampoo. He has panic sessions when I try to use any other type of shampoo on him, so it's very obvious that he enjoys the shampoo at some psychological level, whether it be the smell, knowing that it is his shampoo, or if it's now just a comfort issue because it is something that he is just familiar with. Regardless, it's a product that looks like it is going to be sticking around for quite some time. The product does what it says it is going to do, so I don't see any good reason not to use it, especially if he likes it. My only issue is that I don't really like the watermelon scent as much as the other ones, so I would definitely choose this scent as one of the last options.

My apologies, I was trying to transfer in a bunch of reviews from another site and placed it here without really thinking about it. I'll watch closely next time.

Thanks for posting another helpful review! I don't know if you noticed, but Eco-Babyz is the only community for kid and baby related things on Lunch right now. If there was another one, I would have suggested you put the review there simply because this is a 'green' parenting community, i.e. we advocate for things that are natural, non-toxic, etc... But don't get me wrong, I really appreciate your contributions nevertheless! If you are curious why this shampoo can't be considered non-toxic, you can just read this report on it on the Skin Deep Database.
