Could it get any easier?

The Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless-G Broadband Router is a painless way to network your home or office.  I bought my first wireless router (the Linksys BEFW11S4) in January 2003.  I sure wish I had upgraded sooner.

The WRT54G2 has better range than my older router and it has no external antennas to adjust.  Obviously, the speed of the 802.11g is a huge improvement over the 802.11b.  The router comes with a CD containing configuration software that detects the router through a wired connection and sets up all of the necessary parameters.  Since I was already familiar with the web browser interface, I chose to use that instead.

Although it can be configured in less than 5 minutes to support a fully functional wireless network, this is a full function router.  It supports a wide range of security and networking features for the sophisticated user.  I remember back in January 2003, I had to return the first router I purchased, because it did not support the VPN software my company was using.  Those days are long gone.  This router has configuration settings to allow you to support anything.

For security, it has the following options:
  • WPA Personal
  • WPA Enterprise
  • WPA2 Personal
  • WPA2 Enterprise
  • WEP
This means you will have no problem supporting legacy wireless cards if that is your requirement or locking it down to the latest security protocol.  In addition, it has IPsec, PPTP, and L2TP passthrough settings, so you will have no problem with your corporate VPN clients anymore.

I am pinching myself that I can get this kind of networking power for under $50.  This technology has truly become mainstream and brain-dead simple and secure.  Do not be like me and delay upgrading your home network.  You'll be as rueful as I am right now.  It couldn't get any easier!

Great review. It is a very good buy. Linksys and I don't get along so well so I went with the Belkin N+

You definitely needed that upgrade. I too just upgraded to the N Broadband Router, which I find to be very fast. :)
