I am a new iMac user, having purchased and set up my first Mac just a few days ago. Consequently, the My Book LX (2TB) is the very first piece of hardware I have installed on the system, and I approached the experience with some concern that I would not have an easy time of it. I need not have worried, however, because the installation process is quick and easy.
It is simply a matter of attaching the power cord and connecting one of the three provided cables between the drive and the Mac itself. In my case, I chose to use the FireWire 800 cable, but the drive also comes packaged with a FireWire 400 cable and a USB cable. Within a few minutes of installation and set-up, I had completed my first backup and had even retrieved some of the data as a test of that function. I also (inadvertently, because I am not yet all that familiar with the application) set the drive to be used with Apple's Time Machine.
Granted, it is still early days on the Mac for me and I only had about 19 gigs of data to back up, since my data transfer to the Mac from the PC is not finished yet, but I was impressed with how quickly it all happened. The pre-loaded backup software is easy to understand and has enough customizable settings to please just about anyone, I would imagine. The drive face displays a customizable "e-label" that allows the user to place unique and meaningful information on the display, a useful display that works even when the drive is not plugged in.
Password protection is available as part of the set up and, although I have not taken advantage of that option yet, it is something I will be doing shortly because I can't imagine anything scarier than having someone steal an unprotected external hard drive they can "crack" at their leisure. I placed the drive out of sight behind the iMac where it runs so quietly and generates so little heat that I tend to forget that it's even there. And, honestly, that's a very easy thing to do because, after it is set up, the drive provides continuous backup all on its own. Modify or add a file to the Mac hard drive and it appears on the backup drive. It's that simple.
I've used Western Digital drives as backup drives for PCs in the past, so I knew of their overall quality before opening the box on this Mac-formatted external drive. Looks like Western Digital has another winner on its hands. This is an excellent product, one from which I expect to get good performance for the next several years.
