My First Craftsman Starts the Love of Tools

Pros: Nice variety, durable tools, great size for small hands

Cons: Box comes apart, decals come off

The Bottom Line: If you have a tool lover, My First Craftsman Tool Set is a perfect set to introduce them to basic tools.

My two year old loves anything having to do with tools.  Between daddy's tools and brother's pretend tools he always had one in his hands.  So when it came time to pick out a birthday present, a tool set was a first choice.  While doing some shopping, I was able to find the My First Craftsman Toolbox for under $20.  When it came time for Z-Man to open his present, you would have though I gave him gold.

This 18-piece set includes several different plastic tools all enclosed in a plastic toolbox.  The toolbox is fairly realistic.  There is an open space in the bottom where the larger tools fit and a tray that sits on the top for the smaller tools.  The set even includes a plastic piece of wood for kids to pretend cut with. Each of the pieces are plastic and have a sticker on them that says "workman".  These pieces are an excellent size for little hands to use.  This decal comes off easily, but it doesn't really add much to the tools anyway.  The plastic has a medium durability feel to it.  So far with the daily use the pieces have had, none have broken yet. Pieces that come with the set include: Hammer, saw, wrench, pliers, Phillips screwdriver, flat screwdriver, 3 nuts and 3 bolts.  The nuts are small so they could pose a choking hazard if not supervised.  I believe several of ours have made their way down our heat vents.

Though my little guy has only had these tools for a few weeks, he does something with them almost daily.  Sometimes it's not appropriate use and we use that as learning time, but in general he tries to fix things with his tools.  I would have to say his favorite is the hammer so he can bang on things.  Sometimes he even needs to sleep with some of his tools.  The only problem we've had with this set is that the box itself doesn't like to stay together.  The top comes off fairly easily and the piece that "locks" the box continues to fall off as well. Other than that the tools themselves have been wonderful.
