Christmas all year

  • Feb 4, 2013
This is a creepy story, and brings to mind several of the earlier works of Joe Hill's dad, Stephen King. There are bits and pieces from his father's works embedded in this book (including a passing reference to Mid-World) and he makes the most of them. We have an evil automobile, a vampire-like seemingly ageless (and possibly dead) villain, a bicycle that appears to take the rider across a missing bridge to wherever she wants to go, a strange young woman who foretells possible futures with Scrabble tiles, and children. Put all of this together and you get a great read!

A 1938 Rolls-Royce goes around and children (and their mothers) disappear from various places and the youngsters are taken to a place called Christmasland (you probably don't want to know what happens to the mothers), and the authorities don't connect these crimes, but once a young girl escapes from the car (and its driver) there is recognition that someone quite evil is abroad, and he is put into prison and a hospital, in which he appears to have died, and even be the subject of an autopsy in which his heart is removed. Oddly, the cadaver disappears and the little girl who escaped the first time, now a 20 something mother of a young boy, relives her childhood nightmare, and this time there is no bicycle to help her.

There is an amazing cast of characters and they all engage the interest of the reader. It's certainly a page turner, and almost cinematic in quality (I keep thinking of Max Schreck as being cast for the part of the evil man). This is one book that may keep you up reading long after you should have closed it and gone to bed, but perhaps... you can't go to bed after you read parts of this!
