Pros: Discrete, eco-friendly, applicator-less, easy to use, variety of sizes
Cons: May scare those who rely on using an applicator
The Bottom Line: These tampons are discrete, cheap, eco-friendly, and easy to use. My favorite!
By sixth grade I had been having periods for more than two years and had been strictly using pads. I knew what tampons were, but when my best friend began having her cycle and whipped an ob tampon out of her backpack to show me I was baffled... it was so small and didn't look anything like what I thought a tampon looked like. She explained to me that it was a non-applicator tampon and while I was intrigued I was also disgusted and vowed never to use ob. Several years later I was at the same friend's house and having outgrown my pad-only phase was in desperate need of a tampon. In what ended up being a very deja vous kind of moment my friend whipped an ob tampon out of her bathroom closet and handed it to me. Mortified, I asked her how to use it and she described it as best she could without being too gnarly-graphic. I gritted my teeth and headed to the bathroom, ready to give it a try.
ob Non Applicator Tampons are now pretty much the only tampon I use.
Designed by a woman gynecologist, ob tampons are very innovative and obviously quite a bit of thought was put into designing them. These tampons are made to expand and form to each woman's shape preventing leaks along the way. The tampons are very compact: the 'regular' size is less than two inches long and less than a half inch in diameter, larger absorbancies are only slightly bigger. Also, ob tampons are more environmentally efficient product.
As with any tampon, women should be aware of the risk of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) that can result from tampon use. Most tampon packaging comes with information on this potentially deadly disease.
I'll try not to go into too much depth here. When it's that time of month for me I immediately turn to my ob tampons. I prefer the applicator-less tampon because it hurts less to use, in my opinion. Also, there is no applicator to dispose of, and it is much more discrete. The only 'trash' is the scant cellophane wrapper that encloses the tampon. To use, I simply unwrap the tampon, then pull the string away from the tampon's end. Wrapping the string around my finger, I twist it, pulling outward to expand the end of the tampon. This opens up a place to put your index finger when inserting. This is usually an clean and easy process, especially considering there is no applicator to dispose of (which is great when you're stuck in a bathroom with no trashcan). Just a friendly note/reminder: it is not a good idea to flush a tampon anywhere, particularly when using a not-so-powerfully flushing toilet, or when operating on a well. As usual, you should wash your hands thoroughly with soap afterwards. If I can feel the tampon at all, or if my abdomen feels particularly crampy (at least more so than what I'm used to during this time) I try to 'adjust' the tampon.
Generally ob tampons last me about four or five hours. I don't like the idea of leaving them in any longer than that, and try not to. With the three different absorbencies (18 regular, 12 super, and 10 super plus) I can always find an absorbency appropriate for my needs. With this brand of tampons I have never had any leakage and the comfort is not comprised by this fact.
My experience with ob tampons has been only positive. Perhaps one of the most influential reasons I continue to purchase this brand is the incredibly low price. It is generally one of the (if not the) cheapest brands available in my area. Also, the convenience of this variety pack can't be beat- I always have the absorbency I need in one box. I love knowing I'm leaving a slightly smaller footprint on the earth what with the significantly decreased packaging (no applicator = no trash; the small size requires little packaging). These tampons fit perfectly into a closed fist; in emergency situations where I lack pockets I've been known to tuck one into my palm and hope no one stops me for any reason. The protection is not sacrificed by ob's compact size; I'm always protected and never have leaks, and they are always comfortable.
Unlike I was when I first met them, ob Non Applicator Tampons don't scare me. They're easy to use and smart to use, and simply put they're my favorite and only brand of tampon.
