Oxo Good Grips Corn Holders - Almost the best

Pros: Solid, well made, work beautifully, very comfortable

Cons: Not microwaveable or boilable

The Bottom Line: A solid choice for corn on the cob fans. But if you boil or nuke your corn, they may not be best choice.

I made it pretty clear in my review of the Pampered Chef Corn Cob Nobs, that I enjoy summer time corn on the cob. I don't care if it's white or yellow, as long as it's sweet, I'm there. But there are two things I hate when eating corn on the cob. All of the stuff left in my teeth and people who don't have some sort of cob nob accessory. Therefore, I'm not only a corn on the cob fanatic, I'm also looking for the perfect cob accessory. Unfortunately the Oxo Good Grips Corn Holders are not the best. But only by a hair.

•• What it is ••
The Oxo Good Grips Corn Holders are a set of 8 corn on the cob holders. In the tradition of Oxo, they are fat rubber covered handles, with points that shove into the ends of corn on t he cob providing a better grip and less mess. According to Oxo, the line of products were originally developed by a man who wanted larger cooking utensils to help his arthritic wife. While I admire the intent of the original invention, is it really necessary to have ergonomically superior corn cob holders?

•• Features and Commentary ••
As mentioned above, the Oxo Good Grips Corn Holders are a fat plastic nob. They are covered in a rubber-like material and are soft to the touch. They do feel solid while gripping, but since corn on the cob is not a grueling hand exercise, I hadn't noticed they were more comfortable than any other nob holder.

The Oxo Good Grips Corn Holders are dishwasher safe even on the extra high temp setting of the dishwasher. We usually put them in the basket that we use for sippy cup lids, but they are big enough that they'll fit in the silverware drawer. We've had ours for over a year and the rubber has shown no signs of cracking. The holders are very durable.

At the base of the holders just before the spikes, is a slight plastic ring. This is used for butting up to the corn and supposedly to aid in keeping butter off the grips. This little plastic thing does not work. The grips inevitably get some butter on them. Let's face it: If you are putting butter on the cob and rotating it around whilst eating it, you're going to get a little bit of butter on your fingers. Just deal with it.

The prongs that stick into the cob are very sharp and stainless steel. They have no rusted or come loose from the holders. Once again, Oxo has made an excellent, durable product. Each holder has not one, but 2 prongs. This is to keep one prong from twisting around inside the cob. Since the prongs are rather long, they work beautifully. They don't slip or come loose until the time you need to yank them out and wash them.

Now for the problem that gives the Pampered Chef Corn Cob Nobs the edge. The Oxo Good Grips Corn Holders are no microwaveable. Why does this matter? Because the best method of cooking corn on the cob is to put them in a 9x13 pan with a little bit of water and then nuke them. This effectively steams the corn. And yes, this makes the best corn on the cob, don't argue with me. That said, these corn holders then force you to grip the hot corn and push them in. The same goes for those who boil them. These are not boil safe, so if you boil your cobs, then you'll also need to handle those when they are scalding hot. This is where the Pampered Chef cob nobs have the edge since they are boil and microwave safe.

•• Conclusion ••
Oxo Good Grips Corn Holders are a solid choice for those who like Oxo products. They are fatter and easier to grip and made with the traditional Oxo materials. And while they are dishwasher safe, they are not microwaveable or boil-able. As a result, they are not the best corn cob nobs you can buy.
