Cons: Retraction button on side of pen rather than the end.
The Bottom Line:
This is a nice pen that has a comfortable grip and smooth writing style. I would say it is 3.5 stars but am rounding up.
I am a bit picky when it comes to using pens and often try different varieties in hopes of find the "perfect" one. Whether it is for personal or work, I like a pen to write smooth and solid while being comfortable at the same time. One of the pens that I have recently tried was the Pentel WOW Ballpoint Pen with a medium tip and blue ink. I prefer a medium tip as they are less likely to skip and leave a solid path behind it. I bought a pack of 18 for about $12 at a local stationary store.
The Pentel WOW Ballpoint Pen is approximately 6 inches long as most standard pens are. It is made of a blue opaque plastic that has a triangular circumference. Towards the tip of the pen a blue 2 inch rubber grip has been added in order to make it more comfortable. It has been given a clip if you choose to hold it on a pocket or folder. The pen is retractable with the use of a spring loaded button located on the end. In order to pull the writing instrument back in, a button has been placed near the clip that responds immediately when pressed. In order to retract the writing tool, only this side button will allow for it to move back up into the body of the pen.
I find the triangular shape of the Pentel WOW Ballpoint Pen to be a nice feature of this pen as it does allow it to fit more naturally in the hand. The writing itself is smooth and creates a solid and precise line. The ink is not prone building up if the tip is left in the same place. The blue ink has a dark and rich and shows up nicely on most paper colors. I have not tried the pen on a variety of textures but I anticipate it would do okay on a surface that was not completely smooth.
One other feature I like about this pen is that it is one solid piece. I keep multiple pens in my purse and often these pens will come apart. I will then need to dig through the contents in order to locate all of the pieces and put it back together again (and again).
The one aspect of the pen that drives me bonkers is that only the side button can be used to retract the writing instrument. Most pens that are retractable are done by using the button on the top. I find myself trying to retract the pen by using the top button and nothing happens. Out of habit, I am so accustomed to this that I find myself leaving the pen out because I don't think to use the other button. Although it takes very little intelligence to function a pen, we are creatures of habit and get accustomed to things being a certain way. The grip of the pen also limits the visibility of the inside of the pen to see how much ink is left inside. This is pretty standard with any pen that has a grip though.
I have seen these pens in black ink as well.
All in all the Pentel WOW Ballpoint Pen is a nice pen and at a reasonable cost. It is not the "perfect" pen but I would still recommend it.

Stylish, triangular barrel with latex-free grips introduces a new concept in writing comfort. Transparent barrel allows you to monitor ink supply. Tip advances from top and retracts from side for easy use. Metal tip increases durability.
