I love coffee, I love tea ... I love ...Pero?

I love coffee ... I love its fragrance, its flavor, its versatility. I love the way it fills the air with a rich, nutty aroma and that first sip instantly gives you the energy to face the day.

I love tea ... I love its simplicity, its purity, its uncomplicated warmth.

I love ... Pero? Actually, I kind of do.

I first tried this beverage at an organic Japanese restaurant a few weeks back. It was listed on the menu as "grain coffee", something I'd never heard of but was willing to try. Maybe it was the organic surroundings that made it seem less risky. Who knows? Had I known it was made of malted barley, chicory, and rye I might have been less willing. Sounds more like a listing of wood grains than grain coffee. But ignorance is bliss, as they say, and so I had my first sip and the deal was sealed. I was instantly hooked.
Admittedly it doesn't quite imitate the taste and texture of coffee to perfection. There is the roasted factor and the color and consistency come close. You can even mix in your favorite coffee additives - the sugar, the milk, the flavored syrups. However, if you're looking for the richness, that full-bodied flavor you only get with a great cup of coffee, this probably isn't the drink for you. Pero is lighter, somewhere between coffee and tea.
For someone who loves warm beverages, this is a great, natural alternative. It's lower in acidity than coffee or tea, made of all natural ingredients and contains no stimulants. I drank at least three cups that evening with dinner and experienced none of the jittery after effects I invariably get with coffee. It's also almost absurdly more affordable than the average decaf-soy-low-foam-extra-hot-latte from your local Starbucks. One container of Pero - conveniently available at Whole Foods and the like - runs under ten dollars and makes 130-135 cups, according to the label.

Die hard caffeine addicts should probably stay away but if you don't necessarily need a rush with every beverage, give this one a try. You too might fall in love.

Hmmm, an uncaffinated drink made from herbs and grains thats taste is somewhere between tea and coffee?  Sounds interesting!  And at about $10 a container that makes that many cups sounds reasonable.  Will have to keep my eye out for it the next time I'm at Whole Paycheck! :)

Dude, so worth it. That container will last at least a few months even if you drink this stuff everyday. You should totally try it and let us know what you think! I recommend adding a little soy milk to give it a richer flavor :)

Classic example of why Lunch is great. I would never, in a million years, find and and buy this product on my own. But I love coffee and tea ... drink way too much of the former ... this sounds like a great thing to drink to mix into my routine. I've always said I need more chicory in my life.

Interesting. There are so many items out there people have never heard of. I doubt I would buy this product myself but if someone offered it to me I would be a little less hesitant to try it after reading your review.
