A few months ago, I posted a Wish List for an "Ultimate Remote Control". I'd like to think the fine developers over at Plex were inspired by my article.
After only a few minutes of playing with Plex for iOS, I was giddy. After installing the Plex Media Server application on my Mac, and then the $5 iOS app on my iPad, I was instantly browsing my full library from the iPad. Now, here's where the magic happened -- when I selected a specific movie, I was asked where I wanted to watch the movie -- On the iPad or on the computer. This was my perhaps my number one wish list item for an "ultimate remote control" wish list. Rather than browsing content on the TV by using arrows to painstakingly navigate through the entire media library, I could now use gestures on my iPad to scan through my content, pick a movie, and then tell the device where the movie should be played.
Otherwise, Plex continues to improve upon their incredible Media Center software and it's still my favorite. But this new iOS app is the first application I've seen to add this completely new functionality of letting you send the content where you want. I haven't tried it yet, but it seems possible that if you had multiple instances of Plex running on computers throughout your house (okay, maybe that's not everyone), but how cool would it be to be able to send the kid's movie to one room for the kids to watch, and then send another movie to another room for the "big kids" to watch -- all being controlled from a central iOS device that can be used anywhere you have Wifi. It might not be that much of a leap of logic to presume that if Apple DOES release a $99 iTV, then a Plex App will be waiting for that device as well, making it even easier to share your entire media library throughout your house.
Considering the Plex App for Mac is free, the $5 Plex for iOS app is a bargain. Get it before they come to their senses and raise the price!
