Don't give me that bull!

Pros: Cool looking can and website

Cons: Taste is terrible, costs too much

The Bottom Line: For serious minded people who want to boost their energy with a cold carbonated drink.

A few days ago my almost ex took me to retrieve my vehicle from the repair shop. He followed me back to my place for an impromptu visit with the kids. On the way I stopped at the local gas station down the street for gasoline. He parked his vehicle and waited for me to finish and drove up the hill ahead of me.

He stopped at the corner food market and I assumed it was for a pack of smokes. We met at the gate to enter my front lawn and he was carrying a can of Red Bull Energy Drink . I was aware of this drink only by way of epinions previously.

During the five days my vehicle was in for repair I had walked over to the food market each day for milk, water and 7-up. I never saw this item anywhere in this market. He drank it out of the can and handed to me asking where to put it. I kept it for further research into this product.

I then poured the remainder into a small glass and smelled the can. This kind of reminded me of cream soda although the color of the Red Bull Energy Drink was similar to urine. The cost of this 8.3 fluid ounce sleek looking can was $2.69 at the local food market. I did not ask where he found this can but noted it states to drink chilled. It did not have a cold feeling to it.

I inquired as to why he would be drinking this Red Bull Energy Drink and he said it keeps him alert. Next I learned that he gets up each morning at 5 am and runs thus losing twenty pounds already. The can reads revitalizes body and mind. What appealed to me was how this is intended to improve your performance during times of stress. This will stimulate the metabolism and contains 110 calories.

I checked the website for further details on what the ingredients mean and learned that one ingredient, taurine, is an essential amino acid that is depleted during stressful times. The caffeine is equivalent to one cup of coffee. I know the almost ex was drinking tons of coffee so this might be his alternative. When looking over the ingredients it is apparent that is also a good source of vitamins B6 and B12. The good is no fat present but twenty-seven grams of sugar and 200 mg of sodium. The first ingredient is carbonated water.

Since the almost ex and myself have been in competition over the years I decided the next morning to invest in my own can of Red Bull Energy Drink . Upon entering Vons grocery store I asked the Manager where I might find this product. This is kept in the soda aisle third shelf selling for $2.05. Located next to the Red Bull Energy Drink was a similar looking can in brown selling for $1.85 with a name I could not pronounce or recall.

There were only a few cans stocked on the shelf with not much room for further cans. It was on the shelf at room temperature and not in the refrigerated section. Red Bull is distributed in Santa Monica, California and made in Austria where it originated. So do you think Arnold Schwarzenegger drinks this stuff or has in the past when he was Mr. Olympia?

Red Bull Energy Drink is non-alcoholic and probably the can is recyclable. I popped open the flap top and poured my can into a glass filled with ice cubes hoping to consume the entire can. This did not happen, as the taste was not to my liking.

Now that I know more about this product it is not surprising that my almost ex would be a user. This is like a stimulant keeping him awake and increasing his stamina, much like an amphetamine. I know that a few years ago he was drinking Ensure regularly.

At the website they have listed examples of when to drink Red Bull Energy Drink suggesting before exams and when you have been out partying. Another offering is when you have to travel long stretches of highway. Well the next day he mentions to me he now has blurred vision, which I know is a side effect from his anti psychotic prescription drug.

I have not read any warnings about drug interactions or being out in the sun when consuming this so drink up if you must. You must check out the website because it is very entertaining.

I was intrigued that my almost ex would choose this to drink, and the rest of the day he took my vehicle to a smog check certification and then went to a car wash. He seemed to have more energy and I assume it had to do with fueling up with a Red Bull Energy Drink. He is certainly not in shape but I am now able to ascertain where his excess energy is coming from when he arrives for his weekly visits. I think the competition has begun and I need to find me a drink that I can handle.

For myself I will go back to the Slimfast cans that are not recyclable but taste better and cost less. I think I will start eating breakfast and have a protein lunch. Red Bull Energy Drink is not a source for calcium or iron so chocolate shakes here I come.

**UPDATE - JULY 9, 2001

From watching the news update here in Los Angeles they stated Red Bull Drink is being banned in area Restaurants due to three deaths of teens from this drink.
