Comfortable shave, but not as close as a razor, or even a foil
Aug 21, 2010
Wasn't this the company that used to say "close as a razor or your money back?" For their sake, I hope they've stopped saying that, because they will be giving a lot of money back for this razor. I decided to try this as a potential replacement for my Braun foil razor. I'm generally very happy with the Braun, but it can irritate a bit, and the new Braun foils sometimes grab hairs, which hurts quite a bit. When I first tried this Remington, I thought I'd found a replacement. The shave was incredibly comfortable; you pretty much don't even feel it cutting. The motors and cutters are very smooth, with much less vibration than the Braun (though Braun uses the copious oscillation of its head as a selling point, a perfect example of selling a bug as a feature). Unfortunately, after the shave it was clear why it was so comfortable; it wasn't nearly as close as the Braun, let alone a razor.
To do a test, I decided to shave half my face with the Braun (360 Complete) and half with this Remington. The result was an actually visible difference, especially on my upper lip and chin, where it looked like I had a 5 o'clock shadow compared to the Braun side. The two sides also felt different; the Remington side of my face felt like a fine sandpaper.
So, why am I giving this four stars? I have to make some allowance for the fact that I've never found a rotary shaver that gets as close as a foil. It's not fair to review a product badly that is limited by its fundamental technology. For a rotary shaver, this is probably the best I've ever used. I can see this being a good choice for some people, especially those with very sensitive skin. On the other hand, I can't bring myself to give five stars to a shaver that doesn't do a good enough job for me to consider using it. In summary:
Extremely comfortable shave with no irritation Very smooth operating motors and cutters; little vibration Nice battery display LEDs Very light and easy to manuever Great for people with sensitive skin
Not as close a shave as a foil or razor Has somewhat cheap, plasticy feel to it
I had my husband try the Remington; he's been using Phillips Norelco 7810 and likes it. We liked the packaging of the Remington - small, sleek box - but it went downhill from there. The plug on the charger is HUGE compared to what we're used to. The shaver is not very well made and feels like it's going to fall apart at any moment. While the shave was alright, the shaving heads fell off a few times which was inconvenient and plain annoying. It's also very … more
The Remington R-5130NB has three flexing heads and a pivoting neck that give a closer shave than many similar style shavers that I have used over the years. I think it gives a better shave than average but not the best shave I have had. Some of the more expensive shavers have an adjustment on them that allow you to get a closer shave and I wish this shaver had that option. It does have titanium coated blades that can easily be rinsed under water for easy cleaning. It also has a LED battery level … more
After using foil shavers for the past few years I'm once again using a rotary. Other than Remington, the only other choice in the rotary world is Norelco/Philips. I applaud the presence of competition but compared with the Norelco, Remington falls short in several key areas. It's more aggressive than the Norelco without shaving any closer. You can sometimes feel the razor tug at hairs. Not painful, but an unwelcome sensation. Perhaps this is due to the fact that the Remington … more
I have a couple of shavers in the 200-300 price range (the Braun Series 7 and the Panasonic ES-LA63-S) and these perform spectacularly. While the Remington R-5130NB isn't quite up to par with these and the more expensive shavers, it really does a very descent job. Performance ----------- The shave isn't as close as the higher-end shavers. You will also need several passes to tackle most areas. However, if you're meticulous, you can still get a stubble-free … more
Have you seen Remington's newest technology? The Remington R5130 Men's 360° Pivot and Flex Corded/Cordless Rechargeable Rotary Shaver pivots in every direction for more flexibility than any other comparably priced rotary shaver. The R5130 offers three independently floating heads that adjust to your face, chin, jaw--and even your neck--for a completely close shave. For further convenience, the titanium-coated blades are strong, long-lasting, and durable. What's more, the this shaver is capable of corded or cordless use--it includes an LED gauge that indicates battery level and a five-minute quick-charge function.
