Pros: sturdy, adjustable shelves, holds a lot, shelves slide easily

Cons: ugly color, I fear it will tip over but it hasn't

The Bottom Line: The Safco Wood Adjustable Organizer is a good desk top unit that adjust to your space needs. Sturdier than compressed cardboard, this unit organizes even heavier stuff easily.

I'm trying to organize my office and have been making great headway. I picked up a Safco Wood Adjustable Organizer (19 5/8w X 11 7/8d X 16 1/8h Gray SAF8420GR) to stuff all the stuff that didn't go anywhere else. While calling this unit wood is a bit of a stretch, it works fine for my needs. I am not thrilled with the color but otherwise, it's just what I needed.

About the Product

The unit is actually compressed wood, about 5/8" thick, and laminated to keep it from marring and getting scratched up. The back is solid fiberboard.

The description by the manufacturer is as follows:

Versatility is very useful! The design of the adjustable organizer is perfect for desktop storage of letter size materials. Shelves are adjustable or removable to customize individual compartment size. Includes ten hardboard shelves that form up to twelve letter-size compartments. Constructed of compressed wood with laminate finish and solid fiberboard back.

My Experience

This unit is about 18 pounds and sits on a desk or table. It is a dingy gray color. I didn't see any wood grain or black units which I would have preferred. In researching this unit for this review, I did see it is offered in oak grain for a higher price. I would have paid it!

Anyway, the unit comes in pieces and its IS hard to assemble, at least for me. My husband actually put it together and then all I had to do was to slide the 10 flat shelves into the unit or use less to make bigger cubbies. The shelves slide on plastic runners and are quite easy to slide in and out and seem sturdy. The box says that the total weight capacity of each of the compartments in the Safco Adjustable Compartment Wood Literature Organizer is 15 pounds but I tend to doubt that each of them would be able to hold 15 pounds and not have some issues with tipping over unless the unit was up against a wall or otherwise stabilized. I have mine sitting on a desk and not against a wall so I keep the compartments filled mostly with papers, small office supplies, owners manuals, and CDs and DVDs.

I can use all 10 of the shelves or use less for taller cubbies. I use eight of the shelves and have two larger compartments for larger items. I can easily swap out the shelves and make bigger compartments any time I want or add more and make the unit strictly for literature and other flat, small items.

My only issues is that the Safco Adjustable Compartment Wood Literature Organizer tends to wiggle some when I put something into it. I need to be a bit careful when inserting items into it as I have this fear that the whole thing will topple over. It hasn't even come close but it does wiggle and I find myself steadying the unit to be sure it stays put. I think I will move it to another area where it can sit against a wall so that when I insert items, the wall will stabilize the unit and keep me from worrying about a big topple.

So you know, some websites selling this unit claim that there are some drawers and some flat shelves which you can mix and match. That isn't so. The 10 shelves are all flat with none of them being closed drawers. This unit is completely open. Larger organizers from this brand do have some drawers I believe but this one does not.

The unit wipes clean and is useful to me. It isn't so big that it takes up a ton of space but it is large enough to hold a lot of smaller stuff, papers, manuals, CDs or DVDs, and other things to keep them out of the way and organized. I like that I can adjust the shelves to make larger compartments as needed and that the shelves so feel sturdy and they do now bow even when slightly heavy items are sitting on them.

Sliding the shelves in and out sis a breeze too. Once the Safco Wood Adjustable Organizer is assembled and set up, it's maintenance free. It feel sturdy but I do still have that fear of it tipping over although that is probably completely unfounded. Still, to save my sanity, I will move the unit to an area where the back can be against a wall just to be safe.

In all, this unit has helped me to organize things and it is practically indestructible. The gray color is ugly and I wish I had seen the oak colored one when I was shopping but I'll survive. It's only a little organizer in a little office, after all.

Buying Info

The Safco Wood Adjustable Organizer in this size - and in larger sizes - can be purchased at office supply stores and other sites and brick and mortar stores that sell office furnishings. It comes in a box and does need assembly but, according to my husband, that's a snap. It's solid once it is assembled and doesn't seem flimsy. The price for this size organizer is around $30.00 to $40.00. The oak colored one is around $5.00 more from what I saw online.

Conclusion

The Safco Wood Adjustable Organizer 19 5/8w X 11 7/8d X 16 1/8h is fine for what it is. It is sturdy and heavy enough not to tip over when a light breeze hits it like some of my other cardboard type organizers. The compartments are adjustable which I feel is a big plus and the unit is pretty well made for the price. It isn't a high quality piece of office furniture but it does what it does well and it's affordable. I don't like the drab gray color but it wasn't a deal breaker obviously. Although the unit never has tipped over and probably never will, I do get nervous when I start handling things and moving things around in the unit so I am moving to desk where the wall will be at the unit's back. That will save me any worry of it tipping over but I think that is more my own fear than a reality. I rate this unit 4 stars. It's fine for what it is and the price of decent as well.
