Nice to have a network port and USB ports all in one hub...

I have a number of USB hubs kicking around the mancave office, but I was offered one for review that had a feature I didn't have on any other one... the Satechi 2-in-1 Universal USB 3.0 SuperSpeed 3-Port Hub and 10/100/000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN Network Adapter. While it's not necessary that I need a network adapter right now, it gives me some interesting options should the situation arise.

As the name says, this is a 3-port hub that runs under USB 3.0 speeds. The speeds are what you'd expect for USB 3.0, so there's no worries there. The ports have a decent amount of spacing between them, so it's not a struggle to access the plugs for either insertion or extraction. The LAN port is on the end of the device, which makes it very easy to access. It's all very light, so it's easy to carry around if you're traveling. I did find that the USB plug on the hub seemed to be very loose in the USB port on my computer. But when I plugged it into another USB hub port, it fit fine. You may find you have to be very careful to keep the plug stable and away from bumps.

To try this out, I downloaded the drivers from the Satechi web site (unlink other reviewers, there was no mini-CD in the package... they directed me to the web site via a package sticker to download the software). They offer software for the big three of operating systems (Windows, Macs, and Linux), and at least the Windows software files were compacted with RAR. That was a bit of inconvenience , as I had to go download a RAR extract utility to unpack the file for installation. Other than that, the software installed with no problems.

Once the drivers were installed, I plugged the hub into one of my USB ports and then disconnected my ethernet cable from my normal network card and plugged it into the hub. The network connection was picked back up with no problem, and I saw no degradation in my network performance by going through a USB hub. Everything worked exactly as it should.

While all my devices that use USB also have network cards, there's no immediate need I would have for this hub. But I would have loved to have had it a few weeks back when my wife's network card died. This would have bought me some time as I tried to get things running again, as she would have still been able to use the computer. This would also be a great USB hub to carry around if you had a netbook or some other device that doesn't include a network card due to size or configuration. Wireless is usually acceptable, but if you're trying to download a lot of information, being able to connect to the network via ethernet is the preferable way to go. This hub would give you that capability.

I'm happy to have this hub around for those instances where I'd need to also think about a connection to a network via cable. If I were allowed to give 1/2 stars in a review, this would get 4.5 stars (minor points off for the loose USB plug and the RAR data compression on the drivers). But I'll admit that the compression issue is more a personal choice, so there's not much to complain about. If you ever think you'll be using a device with USB ports but no network card, this would be an excellent hub to have around to give you options.
