Two things: (1) I purchase this locally, so am reviewing the product and not pricing or shipping, and (2), I agree that to my palate this is not the most flavorful of the Seeds of Change blends. It is, however, a healthy side that has multiple textures and flavors, and a touch of the ancient. The blend is based on grains grown in the 'Fertile Crescent'
What I particularly love is the convenience of having this precooked. If you were to make this yourself it would involve individually cooking each type of grain because each has a different cooking time. Moreover, this has dietary fiber and protein that should be a part of any balanced diet. The grains in this blend are long grain brown rice, barley, rye, bulgur, red winter wheat, quinoa and wild rice. You can use this blend as a hot side or as a cold salad - Middle Eastern style - depending on the main course and your mood.
The seasonings and flavors, with the exception of the salt, are all certified organic. They give a subtle, but not overwhelming, flavor to keep the grains interesting instead of bland. I sometimes just squeeze a little fresh lemon juice or dribble olive oil over the mix. The spices and herbs used are: evaporated cane juice (essentially sugar), dried onion and red bell pepper, garlic powder, parsley, chili pepper, black pepper and cumin. There are also a few ingredients that you need to know about in case you have allergies, which are: tapioca starch, high oleic sunflower oil and tamari powder. The latter contains soybeans, salt and rice flour.
Nutritionally, this blend is Calories: 240 calories per one cup serving (about 30 of which are from fat), 47 grams of carbs, three grams of fat and 340mg of sodium. The sodium may be a red flag if you have restrictions, but remember that the serving size if a full cup versus the half cup size of competing products that actually contain more sodium per serving.
I love the convenience of being able to prepare this blend in a quick 90 seconds instead of spending literally hours making it from dry grains. It's convenient and one of the ready grain blends that I frequently enjoy as a side dish.
