Serif PagePlus Essentials is capable of producing quality greeting cards, banners, calendars, flyers, and the like, but it is likely to be a time-consuming process for the beginning user of this type of software.
I encountered no problems during the installation process and was, in fact, up and trying a basic project in just a few minutes. That's when I encountered my first problems with the software. None of the commands are very intuitive, causing the first-time user to spend a good bit of time in "search mode" looking for the right icon to click on. My biggest complaint about software makers these days, now including Serif, is their reliance on video tutorials to provide the same information that a cheap little booklet could provide much more easily and efficiently. The last thing I want to do during a project is try to locate the portion of a video presentation that will answer my immediate questions. Why do these guys all insist on doing away with a simple user's manual that includes a complete index for ready reference?
PagePlus Essentials also has the oddest registration requirement I've ever run across with new software. You have to get on the telephone with the company in order to complete the process - why complicate my life this way?
I have mixed emotions about the product. While, on the one hand, I am almost certain that the final product it produces is a nice one, on the other hand, I wonder if it is worth the lengthy learning curve a new user will have to go through to get to a finished product. At this point, I'm just not sure because I have to find the spare time to watch the tutorials and do more hands-on practice in order to produce something I'm happy with.
Where's my dang manual? I would, by now, be comfortable with the software if I had one - add two or three dollars to the price of the product and produce a hardcopy manual and you will have a more satisfied bunch of users. It's that simple.
I have used a variety of publishing software(frontpage, publisher, dreamweaver, design pro) for various applications - basic flyers, websites, business cards, etc. pn both Macs and PCs. So I feel that I have a pretty good background. I found Page Plus to be a basic, but solid program. There are a number of templates - that would be versitile, yet simple to work with. So within an hour you could have a nice looking flyer, cover sheet, business card, etc. ready to go. Plus, … more
Serif PagePlus is fairly easy to use, has tons of templates plus a built-in photo lab, word processor and graphic design studio. Anything you create can be saved in a PDF format and shared with your family and friends. I especially like the newsletter wizard and you can import JPG, PNG, Word 2007 files and other popular formats. Great software that can be used for beginners and advanced alike.
