A #2 Cheeseburger, Well Done, Cut the Tomatoes Please!

Pros: Good food, really CAN have it your way
Cons: Just a bit pricey
The day after I turned 16 I got my very first job. You guessed it, at one of our local Sonic Drive Ins. It was a fairly new location, and was really spic and span. After working there a year, I'd have to say that I still eat there almost every week. I think that's pretty high praise. I know a lot of my peers would refuse to eat at the restaurants they worked at. Not so at Sonic. I saw how they made the food. I saw what they made the food out of, I saw how incredibly clean the restaurant was kept.
It was kind of fun to open up in the mornings. The grills were spotless from the previous evening and the place smelled really nice, like lemons. The deliveries are made in the mornings. The bread man ("Catfish") brought buns fresh from the bakery, vegetables were delivered and I remember times I saw the manager inspecting the produce and giving some back and telling the vendor not to bring him any more cr@p. The dairy products were delivered early and often. Opening up was like seeing a sleepy little village get going in the morning. Folks came in at different times depending on what their job was. I spent a lot of time stuffing napkins into bags and stocking cups, lids and straws.
The store I worked at was a very busy successful store. The manager hired good kids. The year I worked there, he had three seniors from my high school that were in the top 5% of the class. He called to check references and he was very clear what he expected of us. He also gave us raises and let us know when we were doing a good job. He also worked around our baseball games, play rehearsals and choir performances. It really was a fun place to work.
Cleaning up at night was even fun too. The carhops hit the parking lot with detergent and scrub brushes. The junior cooks hit the floor inside with the same. Everything inside was cleaned to a polish, and then was polished with lemon oil. When we left, the place was positively antiseptic.
The food? Well the food is really good. Sonic offers burgers with your choice of #1 Mayonnaise, #2 Mustard or #3 Hickory Smoke sauce. The burgers are garnished with lettuce, onions, pickles and tomatoes. You can add bacon or jalapenos for a small charge. They offer good hot french fries with not too much salt. There are tater tots and tater tots with cheese. The hot dogs are good too. There are regular and foot-long and you can add cheese and chili if you like. The malts and shakes are excellent, made with quality ingredients. In the last few years, I've noticed some new menu items. I love the cherry limeade which uses real cherries and real limes. I also love the frosties--you can get vanilla ice cream blended with your choice of soft drink, sort of like a shake and this smooth creamy drink is such a delight.
Sometimes, there are promotions such as their Brown Bag Special which is a pretty good deal if you can eat that much food or are buying for two people. My only complaint is that if I get enough stuff for my big crowd then I am out some BIG money. If I'm by myself though--it's a great place to pick up a treat that is cheerfully delivered to your car. Sometimes the carhops even wear skates!
