Writing is a very valuable and important skill, and it's essential for attaining any level of education. Writing well, however, takes a lot of practice and work, and without a good guide it can be a very frustrating endeavor. "The Little Red Writing Book" is an advice and how-to little book that aims to teach some of the basic elements of well-written expository prose. It is one of the best such short resources that I've come across, and people of all levels of education and writing proficiency will be able to benefit from it.

Many of the topics in this book will be a refresher material for most people who have ever taken any sort of a writing class (and reading this review on Amazon you almost certainly fall in that category). Nonetheless, if you have not written much in recent years, or have forgotten some of the useful writing rules good practices, then you'll find a lot of useful material in here. As already mentioned, this book is fairly short, but it shouldn't be rushed through. It includes a lot of good little exercises at the ends of the chapters, all of which have the solution in the back. The largest part of the book covers roughly the structure and style of good writing, with less emphasis on the mechanics. The last big section covers some of the most important or most frequently violated rules of grammar. All chapters include many good and pertinent examples. Topics covered include "Break Things Down," "Keep Like Things Together," "Support What You Say," "Gain Active Power," "Choose an Appropriate Tone," "Employ Readability Tools," "Go Back and Rework Your Writing," and many others.

Whatever your level of writing proficiency may be, I'd strongly recommend having this book around for a quick reference. I'd also recommend getting the print version of the book, instead of the one formatted for Kindle - this makes flipping back and forth through various topics and exercises much easier.
