Your new favorite t-shirt

I just happen to be wearing a Threadless shirt today - it's the one pictured on the right, called "Used to Be Friends," and it's a classic example of the unique and striking designs Threadless makes available.

But it's not just the shirts that make it special - it's how they're created in the first place.

Basically, Threadless allows designers to submit t-shirt designs for printing, and the Threadless community decides, through voting and commentary, which designs actually get made into shirts...or hoodies, or tanktops, or art prints, or...you get the idea!

That means that there's a huge range of designs available, and more all the time.  Some of my past favorites are Infinity MPG, Time Fades, Icarus, and Liberty.  These are only samples of what I've ordered, for myself and as gifts for my daughters.

I keep coming back because they're both fashionable and funky, and I never fail to get compliments when I wear them.

One design, Flowers in the Attic, is downright controversial, and bound to start a conversation about the meaning of the dramatic image or the nature of creativity. I love how it looks (it was one of my first Threadless purchases), but I also admit that I love how people react to it.

If the shirt you like is out of stock, don't dismay - you can ask for it to be reprinted.  If enough people make the request, it will be run again, and you'll get an email letting you know.  I've had at least two shirts I wanted reprinted, and I couldn't have been more pleased.

Sometimes I just like to spend a little time on Threadless looking and the new designs and voting for my favorites.  I've seen designs there I'd be happy to wear, or even hang on a wall.

Sometimes I just go to look around and see what's new...but I almost always find something to buy.  My next Threadless purchase is most likely to be the Scooby-Doo inspired We've Got Some Work To Do Now (there's just something about Velma with a shotgun) or my latest marvelous find, The Time Has Come.  Their new Sorry, Babe... - a series of 4 designs in a noir-comic book style - also looks pretty amazing.

I swear I don't work for these guys...I just love what they do! They're goofy, they're funny, they're alarming, they're dramatic, and I'm thoroughly addicted.  I can't wait to get my next one.

I rarely ever wear t-shirts, but that Used to Be Friends one looks so cool that I wanted it! Unfortunately, they're all sold out of the girly sizes :( Fantastic review, Rich! You pulled up some really awesome designs.

Thanks devora! Sorry Used To Be Friends isn't available - I think that was one of the ones I had to wait on too. There's so many great designs on there, it was hard to pick the "best" ones. What I linked to is just the tip of the iceberg.

I'll have to do what you wrote in review about requesting a reprint! I really like that it was available in that girly boatneck cut since I don't usually wear regular t-shirts :)

Great review! I LOVE Threadless and have purchased a great deal of their music shirts- great quality, unique designs, kick ass customer service....AND amazing deals all the time! What more could you want? Thanks for sharing their brilliance with the Lunch community :)

Well, okay, maybe just mine. Anyone who knows me knows that Threadless t-shirts are pretty much all I wear.   The designs are unique, fun, funky, abstract, silly, scary, beautiful, witty...you name it. The best thing about Threadless is that it's community-based and it's the members who submit the designs and vote on what gets printed. I love threadless.com. I haven't bought anything from there yet, but it's a great mix of the avante garde design t-shirts and hilarious ironic shirts. And since the designs are user-submitted you know that you're getting an original piece of work, which is awesome. Everytime I visit the site I always want to buy everything, their shirts are the best!

Threadless.com is a community-based website where members can submit and/or vote on t-shirt designs submitted by other members. Each submission gets a week of eligible voting time where members can promote and/or comment on each other's designs. At the end of each week, the winning designs are printed and made available for purchase. Each winning designer receives:
  • $2,000 in cash
  • $500 Threadless Gift Certificate (can be redeemed for $200 cash)
  • $500 in cash each time the design is reprinted
There is also an annual "Threadless Awards" in which $100,000 is up for grabs for excellence in various categories such as "Most Groundbreaking Design" or "Best Gallery Photo".
