Pros: Quick, soothing relief of nasal and sinus congestion

Cons: Sometimes burns, read warnings

The Bottom Line: Extremely good at relieving my allergy congestion and discomfort

Around five years ago I developed allergies that seem to progressively get worse each year. My parents moved to a more woodsy area where you can actually see the pollen and other season-changing bits of fluff floating around and sticking in a cotton-ey mass on our screened-in porch. Yuck... I cringe when I think that that is what's causing my face to feel bloated, my sinuses to feel full, my nose to run, my eyes to itch and water, and so on and so forth (I'll try to spare you some of the juicier details). I used to take a prescription drug to alleviate my allergy pains, but have since stopped, as sometimes my allergies are bad, and other times they're non-existent. I instead prefer to take over-the-counter medicines and use other remedies as needed. One of my favorite pieces of allergy-ammunition is ZICAM Extreme Congestion Relief.

ZICAM Extreme Congestion Relief sounded to me like it would be extremely good at relieving my congestion symptom, one of the more annoying symptoms of allergies. The no-drip nasal gel has aloe, an ingredient that helps avoid irritation and discomfort to skin. The product claims to quickly and lastingly (12 hours) relieve nasal and sinus congestion and pressure due to colds, allergies, and sinusitis.

Ingredients

Active Ingredients: Oxymetazoline HCI (0.05%) (Nasal decongestant)
Inactive Ingredients: Alkoxylated Diester, Aloe Barbadensis Gel, Benzalkonium Chloride, Benzyl Alcohol, Disodium EDTA, Disodium Phosphate, Glycerin, Hydroxethylcellulose, Hydroxylated Lecithin, Monosodium Phosphate, Purified Water

Directions

(From www.drugstore.com)Adults and children 6 to under 12 years of age (with adult supervision):

Pump 2 or 3 times into each nostril without tilting your head. Sniff deeply. Do not use more often than once every 10 to 12 hours. Do not exceed 2 doses in any 24-hour period. Wipe nozzle clean after use.
Children under 6 years of age: Consult a doctor.
To use pump:

Remove cap from safety clip.
Hold with thumb at bottom of bottle and nozzle between fingers.
Before using the first time, prime pump by depressing several times.
Store at room temperature 15°-29°C (59°-84°F)

Unlike many other nasal sprays, this one fits comfortably into the nostril and is pumped easily into the upper nasal passage. During dryer months or if I've used to product excessively or when my nose is sore from days of cold or allergy symptoms, this occasionally induces a burning sensation, and has been known to make my eyes water for a few seconds. I usually pump one pump into each nostril. Generally about five to ten minutes after using ZICAM Extreme Congestion Relief I'll sniff and everything will suddenly be clear. I've occasionally had to pump two times in a more stubbornly congested nostril, but not very often. I generally sniff once or twice immediately after using the product to make sure it coats both of my nostrils entirely.

I've used this product when I simply have a stuffy nose due to crying or a slight cold and I've used after waking up in the morning during a severe week-long allergy attack, and the product always works for me. While it sometimes stings and burns, the discomfort always goes away almost immediately, leaving me feeling greatly relieved. This product not only clears my nose, but also my sinuses under my eyes, sort of deflating them, as I like to say. The aloe in the product keeps me feeling soothed while I know the nasal gel is working its tough magic.

I will advise those who are curious about ZICAM Extreme Congestion Relief to read warnings and possibly even do some research. A few years ago, ZICAM was blamed by consumers for loss of smell and even loss of taste. In some articles ZICAM claims that this is just a normal side-effect of the common cold. I can personally say I've been using this product for quite sometime (and probably have at some point in time exceeded the suggested number of daily uses) and haven't experienced any loss of smell or taste, nor have I had any other discomforting side-effects, other than the occasional stinging/burning sensation. More information on ZICAM can be found on www.wikipedia.org.
