Choose the size carefully

This review will cover the 16" and 18" crashes listed on this page. At the time of this review this product page contains various sizes that you select and purchase. Although all of the cymbals on this page are A Custom crashes in various sizes the diameter is not the only difference.

Both of the cymbals I own are significantly different. The 16" has a higher pitch, opens rapidly on attack and has rapid decay. It's perfect for accent-type crashes or marking the one (or four depending on the style of music you play) coming out of a fill. The bell is fairly small and the cymbal itself is not nearly as versatile as its 18" sibling.

The 18" crash offered from this page has a much lower pitch, and does not open as quickly or fully in attack. It also has a longer decay time. In fact the attack takes a few milliseconds to transition to the sustain, and die to the longer decay rate it seems to go on forever unless you choke it with your fingers. It also has a substantial bell that can be used for cutting accents or ride patterns, and the cymbal itself can function as a crash/ride. As you play closer to the edge the pitch will become slightly lower than its basic fundamental.

As you can see, not every crash on this page is the same. In fact, the two I just described are practically polar opposites in every way from physical configuration to sonic characteristics. In case you are wondering I own both of these because they came bundled with a promotional box set. Combined they greatly expand your sound palette; however, if you are searching for individual crashes do choose carefully because there is more to these than mere size.
