Makeup I can feel good about!

I've been trying to cut back on the amount of weird chemicals and preservatives I consume. Stores like Trader Joe's and Whole Foods make this easy for food, but it never occured to me that the beauty products I use on my skin and face might be toxic!

Since this discovery, I've been stringently checking the ingredients listed on the back of every cosmetic product (or here's a great link to find out what's in your favorite cosmetics). This also means that I've pretty much stopped going to CVS/Walgreen's/Rite Aid/Duane Reade.

To be honest, it's not easy to find organic/"clean" cosmetics. I have seen specialty natural stores with a great beauty section, but those stores are few and far between. I haven't really checked out the selection at Sephora but am wondering if this could be a gold mine (if someone knows the answer to this, please do let me know!!) My usual go-to store for green cosmetics is Whole Foods. The selection is pretty slim (one of two brands usually, depending on the store), and the past few times I went they were out of A LOT.............but finally, I got lucky!

The specific Whole Foods I went to only had two brands for cosmetics- Dr. Hauschka, a brand I have heard only RAVE reviews about but knew was kind of expensive, and another brand, Zuzu Luxe. Zuzu Luxe liquid eyeliner was FINALLY in stock AND in black - exactly what I needed! It was $14 - normally I would never pay this much for makeup at a drugstore, but
  • I know the container will last awhile.
  • Organic/natural products are always more expensive, so I was prepared to spend over $10 (to compare, I believe the Dr. Hauschka liquid eyeliner was $22.)
  • The quality ingredients make it worth it to spend a few extra dollars: Aqua (Infusion of Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice), Sorbitol (A humectant found in various berries and fruits), Cetyl Alcohol (Mixed plant waxes), Iron Oxides (Several natural oxides of iron used for color), Mica (Group of minerals used for color), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Bentonite (White clay), Bisabolol (Gum resin obtained from trees, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Xanthan Gum (Corn sugar gum),Lecithin (A natural antioxidant and emollient), Euphrasia Officinalis (Eyebright) Extract, Titanium Dioxide(Mineral functions as a natural sunblock), Cellulose Gum (Cell walls of plants), Hectorite (Clay), Potassium Sorbate (Plant derived functions as a food grade preservative)
After trying the eyeliner, I can safely say that I am satisfied with my purchase! It is no different than other liquid eyeliners I've tried; in fact, it might even be better - the liner doesn't come on translucent like some liners that require multiple layers. Zuzu Luxe's liquid liner was a great purchase decision - as well as a conscientious one!

I think $14 is comparable for an eyeliner. How long do you think it lasts?

It'll probably last me close to 6 months if not more, but that's only because I don't use it very often! It's the same size as most eyeliners so it'll probably last the same amount of time as those.

I don't go to Whole Foods often enough to realize that they sell beauty products there!  This sounds great though.  I just might have to start using "green" cosmetics.

By the way, @EcoMama wrote a great review about the Cosmetics Database.  Thought you might be interested!
