Delicious, Affordable, Habit-Forming Mexican Food in the Heart of LoDo
Jan 17, 2009
Sure, there are times when you want culinary adventure: fusion. Reductions. Something served three ways. For those times, you should go someplaces besides D'Corazon. Because while D'Corazon does have layers of complexity in its delicious, pale green chile, or its impossibly creamy refritos -- what it does best is serve up the familiar... and serve it up perfectly.
Nearly everything on the menu is under $10 (the only exceptions are the fajitas, which are brought sizzling to your table with all the fixings -- and still only $12). There's the "never-ending Happy Hour" for those who are so inclined -- $2.99 Margaritas (limit four, with purchase of a meal).
Nearly everything you'd expect from a traditional Mexican American restaurant is here, and nearly all of it shines: the guacamole is fresh, creamy, and makes a nice counterpoint to some of the other dishes. The salsa is flavorful and hot -- not just gringo hot. The refried beans are a highlight (My kids don't even like beans; but at D'Corazon they ask for them.) The flautas, shredded beef burritos, and the traditional Mexican dishes like Ranchero, Adobada, and especially the Carnitas -- are fantastic. The service is friendly and efficient. The only weak spot may be the regular ground beef -- it has been greasy and overspiced everytime I've tried it in a taco. But the chiles more than make up for it. The green chile can be addictive.
The clientele is broad -- mostly workers and execs at lunch; but everyone from singles to families with kids at dinner, depending on the time of night and day of the week, since D'Corazon is about equidistant from Coors Field, Invesco and the Pepsi Center. It's a great, affordable place to grab a quick meal, comforting meal.
