Whenever I am in north county San Diego, I make it a point to stop into the Pizza Port. There are so many things I like about this place and I think it lives up to its motto "Tasty Gub and Grog."
Food. The pizzas are awesome and they offer unique combinations. My favorites are the Pizza Solana (clams, shrimp, onions, olives, mushrooms and bell peppers) and the Pizza Monterey (pepperoni, mushrooms, onions and artichoke hearts). The crusts are the perfect density and have the appropriate crispness and the ingredients taste top shelf (flavorful mozzarella and sauce, fresh vegetables). They also serve wings and cheese sticks which I have not tried. The salads are nothing special so I wouldn't waste your time.
Beer. The beer situation at the Pizza Port is what really sets it apart from other restaurants. Since 1992, they have been brewing their own beer. I have tasted several of their home brews and have not been disappointed. In contrast to a typical brewery/restaurant that offers a "blond" a "red" and an "ipa", the Pizza Port will rotate a nice and interesting selection of varietals with many seasonal additions. They also feature guest beers from other local craft brewers. Beers are available by the pint of the pitcher. When I have inquired about the different choices, the guy serving has promptly slid a taster across the counter so I could try it before I made up my mind. They also have a sheet with the alcohol content listed so those driving don't get blindsided by a super high alcohol offering. Atmosphere. Long tables that become communal run down the dining room. There are several (recently upgraded) TVs usually turned to San Diego sports. One end of the room has several video games and some vending machines dispensing candy and stickers. There is also a pinball machine which I appreciate since I love pinball and lament the fact that pinball machines seem to have been chased away by Golden Tee machines. My nieces and nephews like it because they dig the pizza and they can play games and the parents enjoy the food and beer while the kids are occupied. Location on Highway 101 close enough to the ocean to smell the salt breeze adds to the vibe. I really enjoy it and highly recommend it.
